I have a apple power book which has just 512mb of RAM installed. IPhoto is beginning to grind to a halt (esp when opening due to the number of photos – abt 6k). was planning to get an extra Gb of memory and install either aperture of Photoshop. Any views on whether this would speed thing up or whether I am better off upgrading to a Pentium???

Secondly anybody purchased OEM memory for a MAC - if yes who would you recommend??

Thanks CAB

Have a look at Crucial Memory;

Crucial Memory

Their website will take you through your system and identify the correct memory for your Mac.

Is your Powerbook a G4? If it is, the extra memory will do the trick (did for me). It's a cheap upgrade (70 quid for 1Gb) that you would gain back in resale of the machine if you then decided to upgrade to a Mac Book Pro (please say that's what you meant by Pentium!)

Thanks - the guys at Crucial seem to undercut apple by quite a margin..... tempted to get 2 * 1gb to prevent further problems.....

Yep mine is a G4. Re the pentium you are corrrect ........ i wasn't suggesting for a moment that a windows machine was the way to go ;-)

Thanks again - looking foward to playing around with photoshop!!

I got an email offer from Crucial yesterday - if you go to this link: http://mail-crucial.com/W2RH0225688BD and order a 1GB DDR2 module, you get a free 1GB SD card.

I don't know whether a G4 Mac will use that type of module, but thought it was worth mentioning.

just looking at the system specs

computer says i have:

SODIMM0/J20STANDARD:
Size: 512 MB
Type: DDR SDRAM
Speed: PC2700U-25330
Status: OK

So i assume i need the std ram i.e. DDR as opposed to DDR2

as always any help would be much appreciated - thanks CAB

I have a G4 1.5GHz PowerBook and a 2GHz MacBook cloud9. Both have 2Gb RAM. I upgraded the PowerBook with RAM from Crucial as has been suggested already. Going from 512Mb to anything from 1Gb upwards will have a marked improvement generally. I would suggest going the whole hog and maxxing out at 2Gb.

However, I also use Aperture and it is noticeably quicker on the MacBook. I have v1.5.2 - not sure if it's a universal binary but things definitely got a bit sluggish on the PowerBook when doing external editing in CS2. One other difference is that on the PowerBook I store the images in the Aperture vault. On the MacBook I don't - this might make a difference?

ETA: If you buy from Crucial, use their website to select the exact mahine you have and it will tell you exactly what modules you need and how many.

If you go through the 'Crucial Memory Advisor™ Tool', and put in your laptop (15" 1.5Ghz for example), it'll show you which memory to order.

If you go through Quidco as well, you'll get some cashback.

but did you go through Quidco to get a 7% (of the pre-VAT total) back?

Quidco.com is one of my favourite sites of the moment.

Crucial are one of the few online retailers I have no hesitation in recommending.

As there is two memory slots if you want to go up to 2 gig then you will have to take out the 512mb that is already there

Good choice with Crucial. I upgraded mine with some memory I got off ebay. Powerbook didn't like it at all, even the replacement after I sent the first lot back. Ended up gettin the Crucial memory and it worked a treat. Wish I'd bought more though!
