I appear to be developing a habit of testing gravity with my camera

So far i have discovered that gravity is reliable and SIGMA lenses don't cost a huge amount to get repaired

Anyway anyone got experiences or tips with regards to camera insurance

Included on the house policy, went with Hiscox through our broker in the end as the all round cover was much better than anything else. Re camera kit specifically I have provided a list of items just to be sure but they have stated to me that they did not need specific disclosure for items less than GBP 5k ! The cover they provided is anywhere in the world, no max time abroad, new for old, and covers damage / loss during most "dangerous" sports such as mountain walking and sailing which are often excluded on other companies.

My cover sounds identical, and I must add it was very reasonable pricewise (and I'm tight! )

I use M&S insurance, and they cover everything where ever it may be. Recently had an unfortunate mishap where I dropped my camera bag and broke 6 lenses. The claim went through without any issues.

I checked the house policy to find out it wasn't worth anything once the camera was outside the house. I then checked the travel insurance policy to find out it was fine for a compact camera but would cost a fair bit extra per-trip for the level of cover I'd need just for an EOS20D with a couple of non-L lenses.

So I took out a specialist policy online. Not cheap but we were travelling 24hrs later. Will shop around next year...

Interesting oddity not many people are aware of.

If you have household insurance for items out of the house and you have travel insurance they are covering the same thing. If you're on holiday and make a claim on your travel insurance, they will check if you're insured under your home insurance and if so, will split the claim... WITHOUT YOU KNOWING.

It's great when it comes to house insurance renewal time and they've upped the premium because of a claim you thought was paid by a different company! Great way to find out.. rolleyes

Personally I don't have any household cover for anything outside the house, but do have annual travel insurance (which is anything beyond 25 miles away).

I extended my home insurance to cover personal possessions outside the house, added about £3 a month onto my policy I think.

as above no need to declare individual items below £5k.

I've used Glover & Howe for years, who have always been reasonable and efficient. I've never had to make a big claim, but a few smaller ones over the years have been dealt with quickly and without problems.
