Utterly Confusing B&W Conversion Tutorial (NSFW!!)
Discussion
I've been looking for B&W tutorials, and came upon an image I really liked, with the recommendation of a tutorial.
The image:
The tutorial:

It's left me in an utterly confused stupor.
More specifically, points: 7, 12, 25, 26 ... By this point I was way off course and so packed it in.
Is it just me, or is this tutorial not quite as clear as it could be?

Just had a quick look at those points you mention. Reads fine and makes sense to me (haven't followed it all the way through though). Couple of points; I guess you know the tutorial is for photoshop? The keyboard for 'option' is mac speak, on a PC it should read 'Alt'.
I can be more specific if needed.

Yes, I know it's a Photoshop tutorial...
Did you by chance follow the tutorial? If so, did the image turn out as expected?

I already have quite a good B&W workflow, but this is said to be more 'fine-art' yadda yadda yadda.
It's by this guy: www.gormanphotography.com/gorman.html

Did it produce nice results?
No

If you recorded the workflow, would you care to send it over?
Yes sure, here it is

If you are a registered Photoshop user, you can download the beta version of CS3. Under the adjustment menu it has a nice new 'Black and White' option with some presets, selective colour control and tint control. Works pretty well, like channel mixer with knobs on (much easier than that convoluted tutorial).

Have you carried out much dodging and burning to that image?
Kind of, but not in the way you may think and not in PS.

I have a copy of CS3 here but don't want to install fully, as it will mess up my plug-ins.
Shouldn't do. I have CS2 and 3 Both are independent and run fine. Most (with the exception of Silverfast), third party plug-ins copied to 3 work just fine.
