Is there a big difference between the different makes? Sandisk, Sandisk Extreme, Sandisk Extreme III, Fujifilm..

Jessops has a 20% off all memory cards deal right now. I have a 2GB Fujifilm CF card right now but I'd like to know if there's a reason some of the sandisk ones cost so much more, because I need to buy a few more soon (preferaby now)

Yes.

Have a look here www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=6007 - pick your camera and see how the different cards compare. Sandisk do seem to perform well...

Interesting site, made me do a little test. The EOS 350D handbook says that there is buffer space for 5 shots when in continuous shooting mode. Normally I use a Kingston Elite Pro CF card (nominally a 50x card) and I get 6 shots in continuous before I have to wait for the car to catch up with the buffer. I just tried a Sandisk Ultra II card (nominally a 60x card) in my camera and got 7 shots before there was a pause. I'd thought there would be no significant difference between them when I bought the Kingston.

Absolutely. Only ever bought one thing from Jessops, and that was a circular polarising filter because I'd been crap and forgot to order it in time for a trip. Paid tenner over the odds, could have been worse.

Went to a christening over the weekend in the middle of nowhere - found I'd left my CF card in the pc

Only place I could find (and this was knocking on the window of a closed shop) was a 128 for £20.25. (I know - where does the 25p come into it?!)

When you're desperate you have no choice though.

Please, please, please. Whatever you do, DON'T buy memory cards or batteries from the likes of Jessops.

They are a complete rip off. You must be getting the picture by now, but the Jessops so called sale, ain't really much of a sale at all really.

With those prices, they don't deserve our business.

I bought my 30D from my local Jessops last weekend after lots of price comparison and even the assistant manager selling me the camera advised me to buy my CF cards online from another supplier! biglaugh

They are the cheapest around for some things (also have a tripod on order at the moment), but CF cards are not one of them.

There's very little margin on cameras nowadays, the dealers have to make their profits out of any accessories they can sell you at the time you're buying.

I see the Extreme 3 1GB is now £17.90 at Picstop prices dropping daily at this time of year.

I have a mix of cards, mostly SD but a couple of CF's and none of them seem any different to the others on my kit. I suspect that the type of card only matters if you have

a. relatively top spec equipment that can use the card performance
b. a download device that can use the performance
c. a need for that last 1% of reliability and extended lifetime warranty

Interestingly you can run some tests of the cards using disk performance testing software. Which I did yesterday using a card reader attached to the PC but it was very inconclusive as the prefprmance was limited to the speed of the reader ... which was running through a USB 1 post.

DiskSpeed32 was the program I ran for that but HD-tune will also do the job.

Got the 1GB Extreme III card today! I'll probably order a few more soon, too. Thanks for your advice everyone, although I was losing hope of ever seeing it, with the way the postal service operates!

First they say it doesen't fit in my letterbox. I asked them to re-deliver, and they don't come. So I told them not to bother any more and just let me collect it from the local Post Office - I was going to pick it up today. But I was woken up this morning by someone desperately trying to push a box through my door which should have contained something like a small PC monitor judging by the size of it. I'm not sure what exactly he was trying to achieve - not to mention the address on the label was not even mine. Luckily he was holding my package in his other hand.. :/ First time I had this much trouble ranting

Hmm, sounds like a classic case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing ..... hehe

I dont follow the expensive card route, ive many CF 1 and 2gb cards
I started with the expensive at the time Sandisk Ultra IIs and then bought the 2gb cards from 7dayshop at a fraction of the price, ive not really found a difference in the real world, i still manage to take many cont. shots of F1s with no problems, the buffer is full when its full is my theory.
these pics were on the cheap 2gb cards on continuous jpg and it worked fine www.pbase.com/elliot_d/lewis_hamilton
If when you dump pics down onto pc, does it really matter that the read/write speed is a little slower, IMO i just wait the extra minute or so.
I think its a bit of a scam IMO all these x167.53 speed cards compared to unbranded unless you are seriously in a rush to get them onto the tabloids.

I bought one of these the other day along with a few other bits
it arrived and is a dane-elec card, at £10.99 i aint complaining ;-)

they do make a difference for me at motorsport events but not for car photoshoots.
