Folks - i've grown bored of my 'greg964' moniker so i've changed my name to what my local italian barber called me this morning, as it always makes me grin!

I love my new 50mm lens, especially when its fully open. But i often struggle to find the right point of focus with it. I've taken hundreds of family & friends portrait shots over the holidays (not all at f/1.8 of course), and only a small percentage are nicely focussed. Any tips?

Here's two shots from the christmas hols; one of a toy anglia and one of my cousin...

I believe Father Christmas got mine from Onestop-Digital in HK for £69
Delivered in 5 days, which isn't bad considering it was the christmas period

has anyone used the f/1.4 lens? i'm torn between the 1.8 and 1.4, just wondering whether its worth the extra price? is the spec the same apart from the aperture?

the f/1.8 certainly looks great from these shots...and tempting for the price...would the 1.4 make a noticeable difference to dof?

cheers,

tim

I got one of these for Christmas too... good little lens yes - does make you use your feet to frame a picture, rather than using a zoom...

Having impure thoughts about the f/1.4 d also Tim, seemingly a nicer background bokeh compared to the f/1.8 but just not as sharp. Good lens for messing around with though and not exactly mad money either.

Incidentally, That's not a 'D' (digital series) lens Matt so only works with manual exposure and external light meters, see www.nikonians.org/nikon/slr-lens.html for compatibility tables, so its worth springing the extra 30quid for a newer digital lens, ie. 50mm f/1.8d (unless you've got an older / film camera of course)

Doh, just realised that you are all talking Nikon and I posted a link to a Canon lens.

Oh well.

I've got the Canon 50mm f1.4 and love it btw

I thought you were all talking about the Canon one?! Anyway, few (really not very good) Christmas pictures (taken with the Canon 50mm f1.8). Check out the depth of field

I've never had a go with them before - they're the rings that you put in between the lens and the camera, right? Which move the lens further away from the camera body?

I've seen them on ebay and ummed and urrrd many times but never gone through with it

I've got Jessops own version (set of 3) - good enough given how often they get used in reality.

Tony, all your shots are further up the apature scale.

They are all f4 or f5.6 etc.

I would like to see some taken wide open.

Closer subjects will have a razor thin DoF!
