I'd really like to get a flash of some sort. I use nikon so was looking at the sb600/800. But i presume these flashes can only be used while attached to the camera?
I'd like to be able to do a long exposure shot and fire a couple of flashes manually from various side angles, so i guess some king of gun? Can anyone recommend anything thats fairly cheap? i don't care what brand really.
cheers, Greg

I don't know much about Nikon system but I'd be very surprised if you couldn't fire them off-camera, either wireless or wired.

Or if you just want to paint with lights, then you just have to turn the flash on and fire it. You should be able to test fire with any flash gun.

Both can be fired by the onboard flash if you set it to "commander mode" (assuming it's a recent Nikon DSLR).

I have the SB600 and it does everything I need, I think it's a must have accessory.

As Poah says they can be fired manually, you lose things like TTL metering of course, but if you want to run around on a 60 seconds exposure firing the flash in different places yourself, you're kinda guessing on exposure anyway ;-)

If you've got a built in flash or just a small one on the camera you can fire another one remotely using a slave unit. You have to set the flashes up manually buit with a digital camera its no problem at all.

Thanks for the links. I've used onestop-dig before and they delivered very fast, i'll probably go with them again.
It says its wireless, would that work with my d50 or is it something for the top range cameras? Otherwise i'll go for some kind of extension cable.

The D50 doesn't have a flash commander mode so you would need a cable.
