Chaps,

I'm off to NY in January and feel it's rude not to take advantage of the dollar at 1.9700

So as there isn't a replacement for the 1Ds yet, a couple of new lenses will be on my shopping list.

I seriously thinking about getting some decent Canon 'L' series lenses like:

EF24-70mm f2.8 L USM (77mm)
EF70-200 f2.8 L IS USM (77mm)

Everything I've read about them says they are the dogs.

My current equipment consists of:

Canon EOS D10
EF 15mm f2.8 Fisheye (Gel filters)
EF 17-40mm f4 L USM (77mm)
EF 28-135mm f3.5-4.5 USM II (58mm)
EF 50mm f1.4 USM (58mm)
EF 100mm f2.8 USM Macro (58mm)
EF 100-400 f4.5-5.6 L IS USM (77mm)

If I go for the new ones above, I'll probably sell the 28-135mm.

Any thoughts, advice, experience or input much appreciated please

You mean you've never heard of 1Ds MarkII???

Anyway, you couldn't go wrong with either of them (both will be great!). This depends on your requirement but have you also considered 24-105L? It beautifully replaces your 28-135.

Did look at the 24-105, but prefer the wider constant aperture of the 24-70 f2.8.
At the moment my 10D doesn't perform that well on high ISO's, so a wider aperture is apealing, ahead of updating the camera body.

p.s. meant the 1Ds MarkII

Just don't get your arse bummed when you return through customs. Those are large lenses are they not, so I expect large boxes too?

Hello matey....the 70-200 2.8 IS is truly amazing....worth buying....you will never sell it. Fancy getting me something while you're out there?

BTW, did you ever get those photos I gave to Dazren of you at BTaP 2005?

All the best,
Luca

Let me know what he says...I'll print a fresh batch for you otherwise. Looking for a Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM (£650 from Digital Rev - Hong Kong Ebay) reviewed here:
www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=2&sort=7&cat=27&page=1

No idea what it would be in the states though.

$1399.95 at www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controlle!-249546888!1166616781413?ci=1&sb=ps&pn=1&sq=desc&InitialSearch=yes&O=RootPage.jsp&A=search&Q=*&bhs=t&shs=16-35
, probably the best Camera shop on the planet.

So using a rate of say 1.9500, that's £717. Looks like Hong Kong is your best bet.

Both lenses you're talking about are superb, the only thing that splits them is their range, and no one else can make that decision for you as it surely should be based on what range you use the most, or want to have the most?

If you were suggesting one good lens and one not so good lens, then 'us lot' could probably offer some help, but otherwise I don't see how we can help?! Both f/2.8, both heavy, well built L series lenses....??

I've just taken delivery of a 70-200 f2.8 IS...it's an awesome lens. Got change from a grand by buying from HK on ebay...got a 3yr warranty but its a retailer warranty not a Canon one.

EDITED - sorry I've just re-read your original post readit and it seems you aren't asking about one lens or the other (soz) you're potentially getting both yikes. In which case, buy both, they are surely some of the best lenses out there and would make a perfect couple

28-70 f2.8 L
Sandisk 4GB CF card
Gorillapod Joby (looked well cool in the flesh)
A new mini Crumpler

Ahh so B&H is open again! I was there just before the new year and the place was shut. Ended up going to another store called Adoraman 19th between 5th and 6th I think whilch I think was marginally cheaper! Did B&H charge you the NY sales tax btw or did you get it tax free? I picked up a 70-200 F4 L IS when I was there...

Hi Shady

Hope you don't think I'm being cheekyhehe

But in the first post you hinted that you may sell the 28mm to 135mm.

Is this still the casehehe

As you may tell I'm interested.

How much did you pay for your 28-70L then. Too much really as it was discontinued a while back.

Ok, ok, it's a typo. rolleyes

I use a 24-105 on my 1Ds2 and as a general walk around lens, it's pretty good.

I was considering getting a 300D cheap when I was out there last Dec (think it was 1.9 dollars to the pound then) - and then I changed my mind to the 350D. Once you actually looked at the sales tax hit, and also the potential grief with warranty (may be worldwide with some of the higher end stuff though) + Canon rebates only work with a US address, it ended up only being about £20 dearer at Jessops (so I bought it when I came back...) - just do your sums before grabbing that bargain!
