An amateur photographer family member has asked for one of these for a Nikon D50 (I think.. it cost £400 a few months ago so assume it must be the D50) so I've got the task of finding one.. that's where you come in.

Could someone give me an idea of what this is likely to mean and if the D50 multiplies the zoom or is full frame? I'm thinking equivalent of 28-80 (18-55?) with say f2.8 ?. Doesn't the D50 come with a short focal length lens anyway? What's the aperture on it Any tips on what is available and what's decent? Something in the £150-300 range preferably...

D50 (and as far as I know) all Nikon DSLRs effectively make any given lens 1.5

i.e. 18mm becomes 27mm

18-55 std lens is ok - soft at the edges. (IIRC it's 4.5 though)

24-85 2.8 is worth a google. (Grays are great but expensive)

I have the Sigma 18-50 F2.8 EX DC - £258.99 at Warehouse Express - very good in my (extremely amateur) opinion.

(Though mine is on a Canon which will obviously drag the lens up a bit ... )

Sigma and tamron both do 17-55 f2.8's or so.

Sigma does a 17-70 thats f2.8 at the wide end.

Thanks all

I have discovered he wants a fixed focal length one with a large aperture (for photos with very low depth of field!) and he suggested 50mm.

this is looking pretty good

after one of these myself (Nikon 50mm prime f1.8)

the lens you have pictured there is the AF-D and is available from onestopdigital in HK for £69 delivered. Various UK places also have it, but for slightly more. For example I am led to believe that it is ~£79+p&p at warehouse express.
HTH

ETA None of the places I have contacted about this lens have had any in stock - not sure if xmas delivery is important to you
