Thought it's more appropriate here than computers and stuff (could be wrong though).

Bought a Viking 1gig SD card the other day. Put it in the camera: "This card cannot be used". Tried to format using camera, no luck (camera is just a generic digi cam). Put it in pc, pc seemed to recognise it. Formatted using PC, stuck it in camera, looked good. Turned camera off. Went to use camera today and again, card cannot be used. Formatted in pc. Back in camera: , camera gives warning about formatting error. Formatted using camera and all ok. Took some pictures this time to make sure. Took card out, in pc, took pictures off now problem. Put card back in camera..cannot be used.

Somewhere along the line the pc and the camera disagree, I guess it's due to the file system being slightly different to what the camera expects. Previous 256 and 128cards worked no problem. Anybody any idea what is happening?

At least it'll save you beating the crap out of the camera / SD card / place you bought it...

You could upgrade the camera to make it card compatible ...

... on the basis that it is 512Mb limited it must be truly ancient (in digital camera terms) and so should be extinct!

Unless there is a firmware update for it. A long shot though, that one. (No pun intended).

Heh, I don't think you'll get them much cheaper than that

£7.99 (not Viking but does that matter?)
So a wopping 20% saving!

512Mb at £4.49

I was wondering if you could fool the 1Mb card into appearing as if it was a 512Mb when you format it?

Your initial description suggests it can work sometimes.

But then for a fiver further cost you can get a 512 so it's hardly worth the bother. In fact at that price for a typical 6Mpix camera you could just buy card after card and never bother to re-use the card. Cheaper than film.
