Decided to take my camera and tripod into London the other night to try and capture some night time shots for the first time. I was quite pleased with the results, some of which are below. Greatful for any comments or criticism.

1: Big Ben from Westminster Bridge

2: London Eye from behind

3: London Eye from Westminster Bridge

4: Nelson watching the moon

5: Trafalgar Square

6: London Eye from across the Thames

All contenders for this month's comp. great shots Rhubarb. Two weeks back for some reason Nelson's column was floodlit in purple for just a few hours, needless to say no camera to hand.

Interesting.

The Eye doesn't seem to work as well as I thought it would but I really like the surreal feeling about 5 and also 4, especially the idea behind 4. My personal preference would have been for a clearer moon but I apreciate that it would require a lot of extra work and presumably a two exposure approach.

Thanks for sharing them.

Not a pro - but I think they're great - surprised at the relative lack of noise etc. Can I ask what camera and what settings, particularly film speed and exposure times?

Right-click on the pic >> properties will give you the exif data.

Thanks, but tried that and just get generic Jpeg properties - would the exif data be lost in the conversion of resolution? Or am I missing a plug in or something?

If you save the file to your computer (right mouse click; save pic as) and THEN do the properties of the file itself, the EXIF data is still in there. I can't see ISO in it, though for some reason maybe I didn't look in the right place?!

Anyhow I REALLY like the shots!! I love the feeling they give and I'd have been very proud to have taken those thumbup

The Nelson one is by far my favourite.... although the others are superb pics, the Nelson one is just so "different" to a standard "night scene"

Trafalgar square one is my favourite, but it's a nice set all round.

Thanks all for the comments. They were all taken with a Nikon D70 with an 18-70 lens and a sturdy tripod. ISO was 200 (the D70's lowest setting ) and taken at anything from 15 to 30 seconds or longer in bulb mode (all the ones here are 30 seconders I think), all taken at f20. Also used a IR shutter release gizmo thing.

LongQ - now you mention it, that would have been a great shot, I'm slightly annoyed I didn't think about that at the time, but was pleased with the nelson shot anyway.

Really enjoyed taking the pictures, and learnt quite a bit throughout the day, not least low f number means large appeture - I knew this already but as you see below it's quite apparent at night (f4.5, 18mm, 30 seconds) - almost makes it negative interesting but not at all what I was after.

thats quite surprising about the ISO on the D70? I have the d50 and am pretty sure I can go from 100-800, or does it change what settings you can use depending in the environment?

Similar to one of mine

Oh and the D70 does only go down to ISO200, which is part of the reason for buying my D200.

I must have missed these being posted yesterday - all fantastic shots, but I especially like 1. and 5.

(Mental note: must dig out tripod from house move boxes!)

Wow, I really like image 3, the reflections in the water which is kinda "smoothed" by the long exposure are very nice!
