Picture differences?
Discussion
Very little diff between 6mp and 8mp in the real world. The linear dimensions only increse by a marginal amount. This should not be a factor when buying unless all else is equal (which it never is).
D50 will easily give you an A4-sized print at high print resolutions. It will handle poster-sized okay enough, but significantly less better than one of the 12 or 16 megapixel cameras would.

I would be more concerned with which handles noise (higher ISO's) better etc.
Unless you're lucky enough to be able spend a good few hundred quid (read: a few grand) on a few tasty prime lenses (<f1.4) or fast zoom's (f2.8), you're going to be using higher ISO's more than you may wish.
The Nikon D50 is said to be a cracking camera, but not too impressive above ISO400. I think the Canon may handle such a situation much better, and IIRC the sensor in the 350D is practically the same as in the 20D - my old camera, which dealt with higher ISO's pretty well

Very confused now as just reading a review which says the D50 isn't noisy !

Remember also that the Canon goes down to ISO100, I think the Nikon starts only at ISO200.
Really, it doesn't make a huge amount of difference. If you plan on using a tripod, or plan on shooting everything in excellent lighting it should make little difference, but if you're a sports shooter trying to squeeze out every last stop to get a sharp shot in gloomy conditions, then that extra sensitivity of the Canon will help.

Stupid question time again......
Is there much difference in quality between the 6m pixels of the Nikon D50 and the 8m pixels of the Canon 350D?
How big a print can you get from a D50 pic?

I've printed A1 from 6mp. so long as the picture is sharp enough there will be no problem. There is not a significant increase in resolution between 6 and 8mp.

Yes, I had noticed the ISO on the Canon went down to 100. Ta for the extra info. Will keep reading.

Noise management on the D50 has come leaps and bounds since the D70. DPReview.com, who are by the far the most comprehensive reviewers of digital cameras I've found (and the site whose opinions I trust the most), categorically state:
We were probably the most surprised by the D50's noise levels, Nikon has clearly spent time since the creation of the D70 on design changes to keep noise down. The D50 has the lowest noise levels of any of the affordable digital SLR's we've tested (although they're all fairly clean, we're talking fractions here).
Their quantified results on a graph show the noise levels to be every so slightly worse than Canon (a nod to Andy M's comment), but the difference is so marginal that it really should be one of the least of your concerns.
The Nikon will only do ISO 200, but unless you want a longer shutter speed on a bright day for photographic effects, you will not find this a problem at all.
To me, both cameras are such good performers that only one thing really distinguishes one from the other and should be the driving force behind your eventual choice - the ergonomics.
You need to go to a shop and feel them both and give them both a good play. The Canon is considerably smaller and the "feel" is much more plasticky, which means that it feels less like a pro camera but it is physically lighter than the Nikon. It's a matter of preference and to a large degree, the size of your hands. The button layouts are also significantly different on both cameras. Personally, I could never be happy with the ergonomics of a 300D or 350D after holding a D50 or D70, and this is one of the biggest criticisms levied against the Canon (as petty as it is). But a 20D, now... but I digress.
Pick them both up and get the one that feels better. Seriously.
Other considerations, just to confuse you a bit:
1) Canon after sales service and support is better
2) The bundled lens on the D50 is better than the one on the 350D
3) Canon have a wider range of lenses
4) Nikon lenses are cheaper, like for like and quality for quality
At the end of the day, don't get too bogged down by the numbers and the specifications. The bottom line is that both cameras are fabulous, and buying into either Nikon or Canon as a long-term loyalty route is not a mistake.
So if it comes down to it, flip a coin and take it from there - the most important thing is that you get yourself a camera as soon as you can and get your creative photography started.
Good luck!

A while ago I walked into a PC World store and stumbled across one of their spotty sales lads giving the low down to a young IT-illiterate couple who were there to buy a basic laptop for her work.
He was dead serious and showing off his wonderful technical knowledge with incredible authority, until I heard him tell them that this particular processor (forgot what it was now - think it was P4 vs Centrino) was twice as fast as this other one, and all he had to go on to make this statement was the near-doubling in raw clock speed.
I had to butt in then and gently correct the poor lad and tell the couple that the one with the slower clock speed was actually quicker in practice due to different architectures and technologies (which is why it was more expensive. Lad really was a nimwit).
They asked me to follow them around then and 15 minutes later they bought something on my recommendation, and I left the store forgetting what it was I went in for in the first place but happy that the trip was worthwhile.
Reckon I should've asked PCW for commission on that sale.
Maybe we should all camp in Jessops and start giving advice. Clud members in one corner, Dark Side in another. Imagine the chaos...
