I swore by CRT until I recently bought a Dell 2405 24in LCD (now the 2407). Once calibrated, it's stunning. I suspect the colour reproduction may be a tiny bit behind a good CRT, but not by much (and I'm picky). The perfect geometry, sheer size and sharpness easily outweigh any colour differences for me. I have a Dell 2007 20in LCD too, which is also excellent.

I'm still on good old CRT (iiyama 19" ), and I haven't seen a LCD that shows better picture (but I must say I haven't been looking around LCD's, so I could be well behind).
BTW, CRT makes a great radiator in cold winter months.

As has been said here, for pciture quality LCD probably lags a bit behind CRT. But in EVERY other respect LCD kicks the crap out of CRT, and with prices now much more reasonable, I can't see why anyone in the market for a new screen would choose to buy CRT now.
perfect geometry
Something that is often overlooked when discussing the relative merits.

it really depends on how good you want to retouch! in the studio i have 2x21" crt eizo's which i do all my high end retouching on, they are calibrated every monday morning before we start shooting, i have not seen any lcd that comes close to a half decent crt. i dont mean you have to spend out on £1000 plus monitors either, at home i have a 19" iiyama and that performs superbly for general retouching.
just check out any grey card on the screen and the transitions between black to white, doing this you will effectively see how much detail the monitor can show and what will show up in the shadow/highlight parts of your images.
