Thought I'd see if we can keep all the fireworks in one place to save 300 threads appearing over the next couple of days... Feel free to post your own thread if you don't agree!

D70 + 18-70 lens @ 29mm
ISO 200
f/10.0
6 Seconds

I tried to be clever with mine and get something interesting in the foreground, and I ended up sunken in the sand... Not as easy as I expected, plus I had noise reduction turned on in the camera which takes a long time to process and severely reduces the number of images you can capture.

edit to include settings as per Simpo's suggestion.

My first attempt with a 'proper' camera. Took note of some of the suggestions on an earlier thread and went from there. Unfortunately I went down the pikey route and had to take the pictures from about a 1/3 of a mile away, so my lens could have done with being a bit longer. Otherwise it was quite fun.

The only three I have managed to upload, might be a few more to come.

Good idea Dobbo, and nice shot too. It would be interesting/helpful if posters also gave the camera settings, special techniques etc.

One thing I forgot to say was that its not easy to set the focus. Had to go for manual and hope it was about right.

You did right, AF has nothing to lock onto otherwise.

I noticed that - pre-focused on the pier then moved the camera up, which worked out ok for me.

All my photos were shit. Blur-tastic. I really need a tripod and a faster SD card

Brilliant.

Why does it look like all those people are walking towards a space ship! Its like the scene from Toy Story with all the little green aliens looking up from the arcade machine.

Well there's some wonderful stuff here.

Love some of the more "flowing" images.

Wasn't going to waste your time by fauning over everything, but I just had to comment on RG's second image. REALLY like that - somehow, very powerful. It almost tells you how LOUD the explosion was that went with it.

Okey dokey chuck-a-roonies, thought I'd bump a fireworks topic from last year, and link to another one I found too (here.

This will be my first play with my DSLR and fireworks so wanted to get some ideas of what to do before I went!

Surprisingly the biggest thing I am worried about is finding the right place - I can see me walking bloody everywhere and the fireworks being over by the time I find 'the one' !!

Anyway, the impression that I've got from looking around is around 10second exposure (maybe less), small aperture (to allow for the long shutter speed), manual focus (infinity? or just guess?) and remote cable release (got to buy one, can anyone recommend for a 20D?).

Oh and what lens have people been using? I only have a 28-200 F4/5.6 at the moment but I believe that should do the job just right?

Quite looking forward to experimenting! (just got to go and find some displays now before the big one!)

It wasn't too hard, but does require a bit of luck. First thing was that I already had the idea of the pier in the foreground, and knew they launched the fireworks from an island behind.

Trudged out across the freezing cold wet sand and rigged up my tripod, and then froze my nuts off for 15 minutes because the display started late.

Took about 30 shots of which only about 3 or 4 were any good, the rest I threw out because the fireworks were all over the top of each other so didn't look as good as I hoped. Tripod was a bit wobbly in the high wind, which made the pier blurry in a lot of them (the photo above included) which was annoying.

I went along thinking 30 second exposures would be the secret but infact it works much better on 5-10 seconds where only a couple of fireworks go off. Too long and you end up with a mess.
