Went out this evening in the Peak District looking for Lapwing and Curlew. Loads about - some pretty close. I was using my X-T5 and Fuji 100-400.

Of course, something had to give:

Usual stuff online about checking connections (yes, they are still there, clean, and the pins move - which is about all you can check). Switch on and off (obviously), and firmware - would it really cause a sudden issue like this - I doubt it. So the problem remains.

Only on the 100-400 so far.

So - how much am I likely to be bent over for when I send the lens for inspection? And how long does it usually take? I need the camera (or a camera) in three weeks.

Thanks.

Fuji UK service are really good - they do fixed price servicing and the turnaround is pretty quick. I sent my X-H2s in to them something like the 18th of December and I had it back before Christmas.

Have you tried the body with another lens, or the lens on another Fuji body?

Only got one body - the X-T5. I tried the Viltrox 75mm on it, and it was fine. Having said that, it's an intermittent fault. I did re-fit the 100-400 after the Viltrox, and the error returned pretty quickly, so I'm almost certain it's the lens.

It doesn't look like they do the fixed price servicing any more sadly.

I guess in my case it's not really a general service - it's a fault with the lens?

If it is a fault they may do it under warranty, if it is less than 2 years old.

In the past they had a fixed price for repairs, for all bodies/lenses, but now it is just "For estimate".

It's more than two years old - I bought it used form Harrisons in Sheffield a couple of years ago. I'll give them a call on Monday, but I guess I might as well just send it back to Fuji myself.

Thanks for the info.

Does sound more like a fault with the lens.

The only times I can recall similar errors was from accidentally having the camera turned on while changing lenses, that often throws an error until you take the lens right off and put it back on with the camera turned off.

Not fixed price but will give a price when received. They do look as though they have a temporary issue with payments at the moment though.

I took the lens back to the shop last week. They sent it off (presumably to Fuji UK), and today was quoted - actually it says estimate - £202 for the lens repair & service. Not the end of the world I suppose - a used lens in similar condition is about £600 - so I’ve told them to do it. I’m thinking that at least the repair, service and new warranty make it much less of an unknown quantity than when I bought it. To be fair it’s had a lot of use by me over the past 2 years.

Replace:

- 2nd Lens Barrel Assembly
- Cam Rollers
Parts and labour
Full service including firmware update and external clean
Postage
VAT
Renewed twelve month manufacturers warranty period on the repaired product.
