Yesterday I asked myself the same question: "what is my favorite picture from 2024?" After some thinking I decided it has to be one of the pictures I took at the Olympics in Paris. It may not be the perfect picture, it is not a picture that will win prizes or make me money. But it is a picture that reflects everything we experienced that day: the nice weather, being at the olympics, the spectacle of the x-country cross, watching the professionals riders doi what I like to do myself. Just a very good day.

I was thinking that 2024 had been a quiet year for me photographically, and it sort of has been as I don't feel I've just gone out to take photos as often as I would have liked and I really should change that in 2025 but looking through images, I have had some great trips that have made for some lovely photo opportunities.

Had a few fantastic Auroras this year. This one was in May and just 200 yards from the house. Was a pretty amazing night.

June saw a trip to Le Mans 10 years after I was last there. As ever, fantastic for photography.

For all sorts of reasons, I've really been making an effort to take photos close to home. This one took that very literally as I was sat on our patio having a gin and tonic when I took this!

One from a trip along the Calodian Canal in Autumn with my pals. Fantastic trip and some truly stunning colours and light at times.

Another local one and am absolute lesson in shooting to the conditions as I'd been facing the other was prior to this and really only turned around to retrieve my camera bag.

I was going to just post a top 5 but since there are no rules, must shoehorn this one in from a week or so ago. Again, this one was a bit of a lesson to myself to just get out there. Weather at home was poor, almost decided not to go out. Walked about 100 yards from where I parked and the mist started breaking up in the most wonderful way with some amazing light as well.

Fairly quiet year with the camera for me, despite two visits to Dinorwic quarry in North Wales and two excellent driving trips to Scotland (driving was so much fun, I forgot to stop and capture the scenery...)

Still - I've pulled a few of the highlights into a single Flickr album...

GetCarter, tell us more about the Christmas present biggrin Love the mechanical engineering on show

Seems I was not the only tog (hobby or otherwise) missing some motivation in 2024. It's on me to spend more time outdoors in the new year.

My personal top three images of 2024. Chosen because my process to make these went down a deliberate, thoughtful path, rather than "oh look, nice light/woodland/landscape".

It's well made... took me about 10 hours. Works well after a bit of fiddling (needs to be properly and exactly put together from the very start). If you buy it, make sure you have some candles/wax as it's essential, and doesn't come with any.

My favourite from 2024? Probably this one from the Canadian Warplane Museum's Lancaster over Toronto in July:

This one's a close second, though. Total solar eclipse taken from just west of Cleveland, OH

A load of great photos already shared by people on this thread. There's some serious talent and enthusiasm on these boards!

Here are some of mine from last year.

I got up pre-dawn last Jan hoping to get an early morning mist / sunrise combo at a local lake. Of course it was completely overcast and grey - but the early start was rewarded with two of my favourite shots of the year:

Roll on a couple of months and I was down in Oxfordshire visiting family. There are loads of red kites in that part of the world and I've got hundreds of photos of them, but rarely does their direction of travel and positioning relative to the sun work to the advantage of an earth-bound photographer, so I particularly enjoyed this one:

A break in Vienna in May yielded this one which brushed up a treat in Lightroom:

And this one which I was pleased with as it was the product of a bit of thought and planning delivering more or less the image I had in my head before I pressed the shutter (a rarity for me!)

I've set up a feeding station outside the kitchen window and we get all sorts of small garden birds throughout the year. Recently though we've attracted the attention of a splinter group from a large flock of ring-necked parakeets that roost in a nearby park. They're bold fkers and seem happy to keep on munching even when I'm right next to the window:

We have a house on the Northern Irish coast we visit a few times every year, and always in July / August. I've lost count of the number of times I've photographed this headland, but I was pleased with the light in this one:

And on a day trip from our place to Rathlin island I spotted these walkers, half hidden from a road-side house by a small rise:

Our final trip of the year was a couple of weeks in North Cornwall, staying right next to Port Isaac's little harbour:

We spent a lot of time on the Coast Path, which threw up some stunning views:

And a slightly intimidating "looking at me looking you" moment with a Peregine falcon:

I've only started to get back into photography in the last couple of years. I haven't settled down to any particular style as I enjoy a lot of different type of subjects. Anyway here are some of my 2024 photos that I'm quite pleased with. Some are from my Flickr account, others are not.

In hindsight that comes across disrespectful to everybody else who has contributed, which was not my intention at all (there are lots of great shots on here of course). I'm off to the naughty step again - sorry paperbag
