I have managed to get to grips with DaVinci Resolve no issues so far for videos, however, despite this I am still really struggling to find a photo editor that can be used to sort out my photos. I have played about and managed to get both JPEG and RAW now when snapping my DJI Mini 3 drone, so I have the files to play with if I can find a decent editor.

Firstly despite enjoying DaVinci for videos and having done a few now, I cannot get my head around the photo edit facility within it. I have watched and followed numerous youtube tutorials on the subject, however none of them make it clear and the process to even start editing on DaVinci seems utterly mind blowing. I can’t understand any of it, nodes, RWBG, white gamma e.t.c it just seems overly complex. I just want something I can upload a photo to and play with some dials or choose some presets, just like you used to get on Google Picasa before it was removed in 2016.

I have also researched and downloaded a few from Google, but they are rubbish. There must be something available that acts like the editor on my phone which will allow crop, rotate, flip and adjust some simple settings to add pop / warmth / glow?

I really don’t want to pay if I can help it - 10 quid a month for something I will use now and again just doesn’t seem worthwhile, plus I have the option of using my phone editor if I have to, although it doesn’t like the images from my drone and produces odd results.

Adobe Lightroom can’t be got for free, or at last I couldn’t find a free version. Is there anything that anyone recommends?

This got my interest as all I know is Photoshop. I know they do (or did do) a light version called Elements but historically I know users found it overly limited & a bit frustrating.

So I looked around and saw this.

https://www.photopea.com/

Never heard of it before so no user experience of pros & cons but it looks like there is a free version.

Premium (if required) starts at $5 but seems to be non subscription based so might be better for dipping in & out but with more expansive functions?

The common free alternative to Photoshop is GIMP.

It has a lot of features (similar to Photoshop), but using it for the basics shouldn't be too challenging. There are many tutorials on YouTube and the like, such as this one.

Do you use a Mac? If so, the latest version of MacPhotos is particularly good and handles RAW well. It's a native app so free!

I use Affinity Photo, and have done since the AP1 was in Beta. I tried it while I was using Photoshop and it did everything I needed. Then, about 8 years ago, when the PH came for renewal, I jumped ship. I've not looked back. I can't remember the prices then - but I suppose it doesn't matter - but now AF2 is about 3 months PH, and I paid when it was out of Beta, getting an offer from Affinity, I presume because of using Beta, and then went for AF2 a couple of years or so ago, again at a lower price than on general offer, although there are offers all the time.

I don't use all the many - so many - systems on AP so I'm happy.

Affinity has just been taken over by Canva, and that normally means changes. But buy it now, and it is yours to keep. No dropping you in it if you don't pay the monthly fee.

Note that Lightroom is a very different beast to Photoshop and I would suggest for simplicity and a generally great approach to photo management, it is a Lightroom style of programme you want.

(GIMP is photoshop style, as is Affinity Photo etc...)

Trouble is, from my experience, there isn't anything close to Lightroom. Nearest I found was Exposure 5 (now on version 7).

Personally I'd bite the bullet and jusy pay the £10/month.

Or get the Black Friday deal at less than £70. I’ve currently paid until 2026.
