VHS to Digital Conversion Service
Discussion
I’ve got some old family movies on VHS tape that I’d like converting to digital. Has anyone used a service to do this? The tapes are quite precious and the only copies, so I don’t want to lose them in the process. I’ve been looking at Mediafix but wonder if anyone has a recommendation.
Cheers,
Simon

I have not used this particular service but I have used this company to scan some slides that my parents found when we were clearing out the loft.

Very good service with excellent quality. I would definitely use them if I can ever get around to checking all the negatives of 35mm film we having kicking about.

Based in Colchester though so you'd need to be happy with a delivery service.

SnappySnaps offer VHS to DVD conversion, and depending on where you live, there may well be a physical store nearby.
Although I haven't used them for VHS to digital, I have used the one in Aylesbury for making digital video copies of some very old (+50 years) 8mm cine film reels.
I was a little nervous handing over the films, which were obviously irreplaceable (films of my wife and her family when she was a child), but reasoned that there may be less risk going to an actual shop rather than posting them to an online only service, although on enquiring, the copying process was carried out at a central location, so I guess there would still be some risk of them getting lost.
They didn't get lost, and I was happy with the service, although it wasn't particularly cheap, although I don't think any of these services are inexpensive.
Your post reminded me that I too have some VHS and Video 8 camcorder tapes that I want digitising, so I'll no doubt be going to my local shop in Watford in the near future.
