I've got a 4 turning 5 year old who is super keen on taking appalling photos and videos with his amazon fire tablet.

He wants a camera for his birthday.

I don't want to bamboozle him, or think this is anythign more than this years fave things so looking at very basic kiddy cameras.

I know the picture quality is likely to be a bit shonky, but it's more about the fun he's going to have.

Lots of online reviews point to these two options....

Which would people choose - or is there another 'go to' kids camera that isn't going to be a waste of money or break when he slings it at his brother?!

My kids both had little Nikon S32 waterproof / shockproof compacts a few years ago, but having just looked them up to find the current version I find they don't appear make them any more.

The picture quality was ok in good light, and certainly much better than some of the toy cameras marketed to small kids. it was not as good as a decent phone really (which is why you can't find many compact cameras for sale any more), but I didn't want my 4yo to have a phone and the water/shock-proofness was really handy on the beach and holiday, etc.

Although they are discontinued, s/h ones seem to be available on eBay. Look for Coolpix W150 or W100. S30, S32 & S33 are very similar but older.

Exactly what I did - the Vtech etc are rubbish.

To be fair to them, both boys were fairly sensible with the robust Nikons, so graduated to my old compact, a Canon S90. Earlier in the year my (then) 7 year old was bemoaning the performance of the little Canon, so after some man maths, he got my Fuji set up and I got some upgrades.

The only issue that we had with the Nikons was that the internal battery on the first S30 didn't hold charge when the main AA batteries the camera runs on were being changed, so it didn't remember the date. My younger son (now 5) has an S31, which has its own battery/charger and seems to be better in that regard.
