Good morning,

I hope someone here can help with some advice. I recently got a 6700 with the 16 -50mm lens. Learning how to use it but I had a question regarding lenses?

So I'm looking at getting a couple of lenses (28-70 & 70-200). Been looking at Sigma and Tamron. I'll be doing a lot of wild life shots next year but I'm very much a beginner.

Be interested in hearing about your experiences and your recommendations.

Cheers,

T1b

Hiya, I use all kinds of Sonys for work, so some thoughts from me:

28mm - 70mm. For me that a bit of an odd focal length for a crop sensor camera. On full frame, it makes sense and can almost be a walkaround lens. But on a crop sensor 28mm isnt very wide at all. One advantage of slightly smaller sensors though, is there tends to be lenses with higher zoom ratios available, and theyre a little lighter to boot. Tamron make a 17-70mm f2.8 in E mount for crop sensors - that would be a fantastic walkabout lens, and give you more on the wide end than a 28-70. (Also, with the 17-70, you could then probably sell your 16-50)

70-200mm - cant go wrong with that for wildlife, and on a crop sensor gives you a little more reach. Both tamron and sigma make decent ones. If you want something a little more travel friendly, tamron make a very compact 70-180mm. One thing to note, the sigma and tamron cant be used with teleconverters (little adapter that goes behind the lens, and makes the lens more telephoto, and some in 1.4x and 2x varieties). TCs are a great way of getting more reach when you need it, for wildlife, without carrying another lens. Sadly i think on E mount, only Sony's 70-200 can use a TC, and the sony 70-200 is a lot more coin

hope that helps!

You can get the Sony 18-105 f4 or the 18-200 f3.5/6.3 2nd hand on eBay for under £250 usually. The SEL18200 is more expensive but would probably work a bit better for wildlife with it having more zoom

Cheers Fordo,

That's really useful info. Really haven't got the budget for a Sony lens (I've read they are top tier but as a humble newbie they're well beyond my price bracket).

I'll look into the 17-70,

Cheers!

Another Sony user here (thanks to Fordo! wink )

I'll just throw in something else to consider: Sigma 150-600 Contemporary.

It's a big old lump and will look silly bolted to the 6700 and you'll also need a monopod..... but is a stunning lens that will get you closer than you imagined. The image quality is superb. Not particularly fast (5.6 I think) but Sony are excellent at managing noise so you can up the ISO if needed.

Plenty on the second hand market so good value too.

Cheers Crude, I'm going to stick with new. Think with my newb skills it will just be easier to put stuff down to user error rather than "hmmm, is there a problem with this lens?" Plus it seems like there's a bit of development war going on at the moment and the current crop Sigma's are not that far away from a Sony (minus the mammoth price tag).

Thanks,

T1b

No worries. All of my lenses (bar one) are 2nd hand from Mpb or eBay, but so far havent come across any duff ones! Good choice with sigma! I have quite a few sigma lenses and they're brilliant, that said, all mine are primes, so no experience of the Sigma tele lenses. I'd say i'm definitely at the amateur end of the range too with an a6400 smile

I have an older 6300 for which I recently bought the Tamron 18-300.

Check out the reviews. V pleased with it here. (Soft at the edges @ f3.5, but with that bizarre amount of reach 'twas to be expected).

I got an A6700 and a Sigma 18-50 f2.8 which is great, but it overlaps with the lens you got with the body.

I also splashed out on a Sony E 70-350 G OSS when I spotted it discounted on Amazon. I haven't used it much yet but the images kook good and I'm away on holiday so I'll have more chances to use it. I'd suggest using camerapricebuster (if you don't already) to find the best deals (they include used too) - that's where I spotted the price drop.

Look forward to hearing how you got on with the lens when you're back from hols!

I have a Sony A6700 with a 16-55 f2.8 Sony G lens and the Sony 70-350 G. I also got the 70-350 recently from Amazon with a generous discount. The lens is excellent and balances well on the A6700. I find both lenses very sharp.

For context on expectations I came from using a Canon R5 and a raft of RF lenses and I’m happy with the above combo. Planning on adding a couple of Sigma 1.4 to finish off.

I've got the Sigma 16mm f1.4 as well. Lovely lens!

Oh the confusing world of lenses and the newbie...

Initially I was looking at the following:

Sigma 24 - 70mm
Sigma 70 - 200mm

Now, the Sigma 28 - 105mm has been newly released.

As a newbie, I really don't want to have buyers regret and all of this is to help me train up for a Safari next May.

The previews of the 28 - 105mm have been very positive. Any thoughts? I know a few people say "You need a 400mm zoom for Safari" but I figured with the ASP-C crop 200mm effectively becomes 300mm?

Be interested in hearing your thoughts,

Cheers,

T1b
