Good morning and Happy New Year!

I'm hoping someone here can offer up some advice to a total novice. So I'm looking for a compact 4K Camera for holidays. I had a Canon Sureshot back in the day but have used the phones Camera for a while now but want to up my game for both stills and video.

Budget is <£1k

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers

T1b

Good call on the Sonys!

Don't get too hung up on the 4K thing. Unless you'll be watching your productions on a large screen 4K TV, you'll not see any significant difference between HD. 4K also hoovers up memory and you need a meaty computer for editing unless you get into the whole proxy thing!

Big fan of the RX100 Sony's, got a couple.

If you don't need the big sensor of the RX100's though, the Sony HX range ... in particular the HX60 or HX99 ... are worth a look.

Not as "photographer" centric as the RX100's, but still very capable.

I have an oldish Windows computer and it really doesn't like 4k. I did download a program to play them but it wasn't good so I stick to 1080.

As far as compact cameras go, I have a Canon and a Panasonic but because the Canon has a flip screen, I use it far more.

We have a Panasonic tz200 which is very similar to the Sony rx100. Unless you are really wanting a decent zoom I’d just upgrade your phone to one with a highly rated camera.

For most people the phone software will take better photos than any hardware benefits in a small camera. Also one less thing to drag around.

I have just bought a Panasonic LX 15 after my previous Lumix finally died.

Very happy with it and I think it is the perfect holiday camera. It is also less than £500 - I am not sure if spending £1,000 on a camera for holidays might be overkill…

I would disagree that a phone can do the same job though.

When I view my photos on an iPad or TV it is apparent straight away which ones came from the camera and which came from a phone. There is a definite difference which is hard to articulate - the phone photos just appear over processed or “artificial” in anything other than perfect light. Newer phones may be better though I don’t see how a tiny camera phone sensor can ever compete with a 1” sensor in a compact camera.

In relation to this the Panasonic has a f1.4 aperture at the wide end so low light pictures are not an issue…

I agree. While standard photos from my mobile are just about passable, if there is any zoom on it, the picture is utterly crap on a monitor.
It doesn't necessarily need a 1" sensor though.

I have a Canon SX740HS vs my Panasonic TZ100 and as the latter has only a 10x zoom and no flip screen, it gets used far less. The difference is negligible.

OP is this for still photographs? Or videos?

As a good around compact camera for both photo and video my usual suggestion is the Canon G7X.

Yes, but with caveats... I own one, and whilst it is great for still photography, I think it would be overkill for most casual users.

The TZ95D overcomes those issues. I'm very impressed with mine.

I own one too. It's like Leica for a fraction of the price.

But yes, it is perhaps a bit niche in that it is fixed lens. Still, awesome everyday camera when you get to know it.
