As I've got no idea where to start I thought I'd ask for recommendations...

Budget wise, again I don't know where to start. Is £100 realistic?? I bought some surprisingly good Celeron 15x70 bins for stargazing for less than that but a) it was 12 years ago and b) and absolute bargain.

Compact means something less than 30 objectives, depending on quality you want, yes £100 should be achieveable. Good thing about optics is that there's usually something to match every budget and these days, there has been a lot of trickle down of the really high quality stuff over the years so the overall quality of optics is very good i think. On the budget end, hawke or vortex are pretty decent, if you feel like spending more the zeiss victory pocket is truly superb for it's size. There's a whole lot of things in between that would work but would advise trying them out yourself before buying as low exit pupil can make eye placement a little tricky so different brands can work better for you.

Opticron are an excellent brand too. https://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/Opticron/Optic...

Might be helpful if you defined what you mean by "compact", to me that means something that could fit in a jacket pocket (8x32's are in then) but if you want them to fit in a trouser pocket then we are in a different range of optics.

Always worth a look on CameraPriceBuster for the best pricing... https://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/Binoculars

If you're not out at dawn/dusk then 25 could be fine - I have a pair of Opticron Discovery 10x25 which are compact (fit in the palm of my hand) but plenty good enough when out and about when the weather is fine. I'm not sure they still make them but they look very similar to this pair for £100 at a shop local to me
