Very novice photgrapher so will most likely be a daft question to the more experianced...

I have a Canon EOS450D with a Canon 70-300 lens, recently when zoomed right out during daylight the photos come out either completely black or very dark even top half of the photo darker than the bottom, ISO and focus are both on auto.

Lens problem, camera problem or user error?

Suggest post a sample photo to show the EXIF information - eg shutter speed, aperture etc?

Either that or you left the lens cap on hehe

Do photos come out OK at the 70mm end?

When the op said “zoomed right out” I think 70mm is what was meant.

If so, it sounds like the ribbon cable inside is damaged.

The other variable is 'during daylight'. That suggests that under other lighting conditions it works OK when 'zoomed right out', but I can't think what the connection would be. More info needed.

Or perhaps the op has only taken photos in daylight since the issue was noticed.

But yes, more info needed.

I will take some tester photos at different zoom setting and post them here (might take a few days as busy with work)
Not taken any night shots with flash to compare as only used the camera during the day, noticed it on Saturday when I got home and loaded the pgotos I had taken of a Spitfire at Compton Abbas airfield (deleted them all as they were very dark/black)

'ISO and focus are both on auto.'

What about exposure - was that on auto too?
