Hi all, apologies if this has been done before but couldn't find anything when looked through.

I'm looking for a budget camera that's a bit of a Swiss army knife. I'd like to mainly use it for wildlife photography, anything from a far off white tailed eagle to a closeup of an insect. A bit of everything really, although not too bothered about video.

I was thinking my best bet would be something like a bridge camera as I need it to be simple and not too bulky as I have lots of kit to carry already. An SLR seems like it would be a bit of a faff with all the separate lenses etc. and a compact would be too compromised.

Ideally I would like new, but might consider second hand. Absolute top budget is £250, but ideally would like to spend less if possible.

I'm guessing it's a tough ask.

Are you up here? (We have two nesting about 400 metres away).

Can't help with the camera I'm afraid. Best I could think of was... for your insects:

..and for your eagles:

Vivitar! Blimey that takes me back. They made good lenses. I still have the Series One 70-210 f3.5.

Down south, I've seen them a few times at Arne quite a bit but never got a good photo of the eagles or osprey. Want a camera I can keep in my daysack

The Sony A6000 is small. I kept it in my coat pocket for years (without the long lens).

How likely are you to develop? If you just want to snap some pics then something like a top end compact or one of the rangefinder removable lens cameras of the Olympus pen style might suit you (the latter will need to be used and is a big step up in capability).

Personally I'd suggest going for a used slr at your budget, I was horrified the other day when I put my Nikon d7100 in a trade in valuation and the valuation was sub £200. That would make something like a d3100 which is a nice capable camera with the two kit zooms which will cover you from wide angle up to telephoto and take nice pictures I reckon your budget would comfortably cover that and a couple of memory cards. Chuck on a 35mm 1.8 as a walk around lens and you have something that will let tons of light in and blur backgrounds really nicely (that's incidentally been my main lens since getting the camera scarily about ten years ago).

Go to a camera shop (a nice independent ideally) be really upfront about what you want and don't want and have a play with a few. One will feel right. I reckon a top end compact would suit you well.
