Update my Canon/Sigma
Discussion
Guys,
For many years now I've been using a DSLR - Canon EOS550D, coupled with a Sigma 17-50mm lens. Main requirement is for moving shots fairly nearby - probably vehicles more often than not.
It's been pretty good over many years but is showing old age.
I'd like to stick with Canon - any suggestion for a newer model - and lens?
Many thanks.

Exactly. Difficult to not suggest L glass if budget allows.
As for the body, not sure where they've improved, perhaps less noise when going up the ISO, which may or may not help.
Autofocus has come a long way too, especially with mirrorless. As for the body, not sure where they've improved, perhaps less noise when going up the ISO, which may or may not help.
If the budget is limited, for vastly improved image quality I’d suggest a used 5D3 and used lens to suit. With the 5D3’s larger sensor, there’s a better choice of wide angle lenses.

Never been happy with autofocus (on 550D) for moving shots but it's good to hear that it's improved.
Pre-focusing using manual focus can work well for this.Simpo Two said:

Any ideas out there?

Yes, I tend to always use manual focusing anyway. I was quite interested to read that autofocus had been improved but I don't know how much better that makes it now.

If you want to stick with a crop sensor, you could keep your Sigma lens, buy a grey import, brand new mirrorless camera, which is chalk and cheese with regards to spec of your old 550D DSLR, perhaps have a look at something like this?I want to stick with Canon if possible but there's not much in their DSLR range up to, say, £1,500.

I can't comment on the performance of your Sigma lens on this body, but the AF system in the R7 is going to be much better, tracking, in body stabilisation etc. Check out the specs, it would be a massive upgrade... If it's like other R bodies that I have it most probably has Focus Assist to help with manual focusing.... I'd advise searching reviews on Youtube etc.
Just note you need a body with adaptor to mount EF onto R body. I have bought two bodies from HDEW in the past and have had no trouble and the money you save could go towards a newer lens later on.

I've had a 5D3 body, R5 body, and 100mmf2.8L macro lens from them with zero issues.
The (very few) people on Talkphotography who have had an technical issue have reported that the HDEW warranty has taken care of it without problems.
I'll certainly use them again for future new purchases.
ETA - also don't worry about having to use the R/EF converter to use older (EF and EF-S) lenses on new R series Canon cameras. It works perfectly, and has no glass in it, so image quality is unaffected. Since getting the R5, I've not changed any of my lenses (Canon L 24-104f4, 70-200f2.8, 100f2.8 macro and a Sigma 120-300 f2.8), and don't plan to.
