I've acquired a good quality hard plastic case that I'm thinking will make a good storage / transport case for my various cameras and drone when I take the on holiday.

Can anyone recommend a foam insert spec / manufacturer (preferably amazon / bay available) that can be cut easily to make cut-out for various bits and pieces?

Cheers.

I reckon your best bet would be to go to an upholsterer. They carry lots of foam. And the tools to cut it properly. You basically need an electric knife and even then you will certainly make a pigs ear of it. If you want a nice job use an upholsterer.

IIRC you can buy foam pre-cut into plastic slices so you can gouge out your own holes.

Failing that, just buy a lump and slice it as required with a sharp craft knife.

I’ve long thought I could / should / would like to set up a business doing this. Also for mechanics tools. It consistently gets on my wick. There is not much suitable, only answers are normally that stuff that is already in cubes you just take out sections; or a possibility something could be made up with ‘layers’ - glued up like glulam.

There never seems to be a decent solution that gets proffered.

I've tried various forms of foam over the years, and none have worked satisfactorily. The worst aspect for me is bits flying off (the foam, not me). It can be powdery. I'm currently using those velcro pads. I find them effective, but if I don't need a particular lens, say, for the day, if I remove it the integrity of the construction is foiled. I put in little blocks to pad it out, which rather destroys my no bits of foam idea.

Solutions sought. Anyone cracked it?

If it's a case from a company like Pelicase you can buy replacement foam.

Or send the case and kit away to a company like 5 Star Cases which will make an insert perfect for your kit.
