Whats sort of spec is required for decent enough footage ?

Not looking to spend a huge amount, and have seen some Gopro4 footage that looked and sounded fine for onscreen and phone views.

Never been in this market before, but have lots of good/bad and yes/no on extension mics etc.

Just looking to capture some track day action and maybe an afternoon run out without committing a lot of cash.

Go pro hero 8 in the diving protection case here, case muffles the noise as it was quite loud biggrin

Upgrade the playback quality to 4k any you see the difference between a gopro 4 and a more recent one. Newer ones also have better image stability software.

I have GoPro hero 9 and a 10 and the difference between the older devices and the 9 and 10 is very clear. It's the stabilisation which has probably improved the most - you can mount a 10 on a roll bar and get very good vibration free footage. Mine are on my motorbike helmet and the bike and even on a KTM 1300cc V-Twin which does vibrate a bit, I get clear and stable footage with the 9 mounted on the handlebar using RAM mounts without any additional anti-vibration mechanism.

I've had cheap cameras, couple of expensive Sony cameras and the GoPro really is the very best for a few hundred pounds, the 10 is less than £400 and is stunning. They have had years to refine the software and the sensors and right now, 4k 60fps footage from a 9 or 10 is remarkably good, vibration free, quick to adjust to changing light and very good colour compared to anything else at that price or lower.

If you want something more expensive - which you said you didn't, OK, but the new Insta 360 RS 1 inch sensor is looking fantastic and will give higher quality footage than a GoPro but not sure about stabilisation. https://store.insta360.com/product/one_rs_1_inch_3...

If you bought a GoPro 9+ or the Insta you'd find all sorts of other things to use them for, family holidays, outings, other hobbies.

Unfortunately there isn't a cheap way to get high quality footage, it's like cars, you can get two of fast, cheap and reliable but not all three together !

Go pro 8 would be the minimum for decent 4k with some stabilisation I would say (though only 30 frames a second not 60 like the 9 and 10], for the above footage I also had the dive case which is good for Caterham sound as it is too loud with lots of wind noise otherwise, and the head mount though you might want to try a few options. Should be able to get all that for about £300 second hand I would expect.

Gopro currently have £200 off the Gopro 10 which is a pretty decent deal, if you sign up via email you get a 10% code off first order as well.

The DJI Action 2 is a decent camera as well but in 4k can overheat quickly if there's no airflow cooling it so when moving it will be fine but if waiting in the pitlane in the sun then may cause issues.

I have a Hero 10 and a Saramonic Blink Pro 500 wireless mic, works really well for me. Really impressed with the Saramonic kit and actually just upgraded to the twin mic set up so will be selling the single mic kit
