I've been looking at these as a replacement for my Hero 4.
The mic on the 4 is rubbish particularly when wrapped in the plastic box, however I think the Hero 10 mic is much better? and indeed you can't get a mic for it. Does anyone know enough about this to give me a steer before I drop several hundred on one. It'll be primarily used in a race car.

Also what is the Go pro subscription all about. Brings the price down but why do I need it?

thanks.

I've got one.

The in-built sound sound is definitely better than the 3 and Session 5, marginally better over the 7 (my GoPro ownership history).

You can get a GoPro mic (called "MediaMod" or something like that), and after market ones to run via the usb-c port adapter.

Aside from that, I can't help too much as I'm more about the video than the sound so haven't actually tried any external mics, sorry.

I've got Hero 9 and the internal mic is useable for what you'd use a GoPro for, ie, YouTube/holidays/sports etc, sounds quite reasonable. In a race car I'd imagine there will be too much noise for the internal mic on the GoPro so you'll need to put tape over the holes where the mics sit, plus you can adjust settings for audio processing: https://projectgo.pro/gopro-audio but not sure this will be sufficient.

I'd recommend an external mic which you can connect using the mic adapter, as mentioned above which is this: https://gopro.com/en/us/shop/mounts-accessories/pr... I've got one but never used it, I use the MediaMod with a Rode lavalier mic gaffa taped inside my helmet and this works really well. MediaMod is here: https://gopro.com/en/us/shop/mounts-accessories/ca...

The benefit of using an external mic like the Rode is that you can wrap it in foam and tape to tailor the amount of noise it receives and put it in a more useful position for audio and leave the camera where it gets the best view. You can also use a wireless mic - several companies make them like Sennheiser, Rode, DJI also have a new Mic product.

I use this mic: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07WM65GTF

You don't.

It's essentially a cloud storage service with some editing features. If you're using any existing editing platform then there's nothing really with the GoPro subscription that you can't already do.

thanks all, a bit to think about. My current set up dos use a lavalier microphone, occasionally I can't transfer the sound to imovie ( although the pic is fine ) and I can 'hear' it on the camera.

Agree with all of that. I’ve just bought a Rhode but haven’t set it up yet.

But don’t discount a cheap £10 lavalier mic. This is the result of one of those eBay ones going through the GoPro USB adapter into a basic Hero 4 black (I found cheap eBay adapters a bit flakey).

If you compare it to some other recordings I did with the internal mic it’s miles better. I added some compression and a soft limiter in DaVinci Resolve which also helps.

I’m looking forward to seeing if the Rhode is any better, considering the price difference it had better be!
