Never had a gopro or anything similar before so hoping for some advice on what to buy for some holiday videos and maybe action shots at waterfalls, snorkelling etc.

Ive seen bad reviews about battery life on gopro but the gopro10 apparently comes with an extra battery package and dual charging. I've also seen go pro like videos where the hand pole is edited out is this done in post editing or is the camera basically programmed to ignore a specific pole?

thanks from a novice

Depends on your budget but I've been really pleased with my DJI Osmo Action. It's got fantastic stabilization, can shoot in all the resolutions you could want and uses the same accessories as a GoPro. You can probably get one pretty cheap now as they've just launched the Action 2.

I think there was a firmware update out recently that improved battery life on the GoPro hero 10, although I think it was to address overheating initially which it seems the new DJI suffers from too.

Yi used to be a reasonable competitor but it seems they've fallen by the wayside. I probably wouldn't look far from GoPro and DJI, it seems a tough market to compete in.

I've just upgraded from a GP5 and gimbal to a 10.

It is very very good.

Have a look at the new dji modular cam too.

I've got a couple of the SJ9000 go-pro equivilants that cost me £25 each, because we were using them on vehicles, model helicopters etc and they work really well, especially as they are £25 from ebay.

I use GoPro 9 blacks, mainly because they offer excellent video quality, there are lots of mounts and bits for them, they are reliable and easy to use with gloves on. I tried a Sony 4k action cam a few years ago and it was fragile, difficult to see the screen in sun and it needed gopro mounts to make it useful plus the stabilisation was terrible.

As an overall package it's hard to beat the 9 or the 10.

Yeah i think I'm looking for something fairly robust, waterproof and easy to use particularly as I'm planning initially to take it on holiday to a cold country and hopefully couple the gopro footage up with some drone footage.

I'm guessing i need an add on for stabilisation tho? or is it buit into the camera if you've attached it to a helmet or body strap for example?

The GoPro 9 and 10 both have fantastic stabilisation in them, including horizon levelling. I just have a mount on the chin of my helmet which the GoPro slots into. The footage is very smooth straight from the camera and only needs a little colour adjustment if you're fussy.

Not me but a good demonstration: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9aUyUum5qk

They have some on a very long way. One youtuber who is very popular is Itchy Boots and she's shot all of her videos on GoPro 8 and later a 9. One sample video at random . . . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0sRETFtO3g She does process the videos before posting them. Unfortunately a lot of PCs have trouble playing back 4k60 videos and even my Dell XPS13 i7 struggles, but my Mac M1 plays her videos perfectly.

You need to configure them correctly - setting the video bandwidth to 100mbps for example, and use high quality memory cards, but there are loads of videos on youtube on how to do this.

I use one of these, considerably smaller than GoPro

Memory is limited and and not expandable but waterproof and simple to grab and mount, recently mostly magnetically attached to the Tennis net for me to try to improve my horrendous and varied bad form.

Overall resolution could be higher but quality is good, stabilization is good and I like the post shooting option of changing aspect/stabilization etc.

I started off with the gopro hero 3 then many years later got the gopro 8 black.
the 8 gives create quality but my god it has some bugs and crashes a lot so you have to remove the battery.
done all the firmware updates but still the same.

If you buy a gopro research which are the buggy models.
