I've seen that Canon have launched their new mirrorless full frame cameras, the R5 & R6.

I've been waiting for the 5d mk V DSLR for ages now and was hoping that it would be announced or be strongly hinted at alongside the new mirrorless releases. I have no interest in changing lens mount, but the R5 has a great feature set which is tempting for me, so....

Does anyone have practical experience of using EF glass using the mount converter on the original 'R'?

No personal experience but I've watched a lot of YT videos, consensus seems to be that the AF is maybe slightly slower than the dedicated lenses, but still very good.

Starting to consider p/exing my 5DSR against an R5, I've already got a bunch of Canon L lenses. It's the video side of things that appeals to me more these days, and that's something the 5DSR doesn't really do.

Slower AF is not good, but the IBIS and 8k burst video might be useful for me (30fps at 8k might give me useable still frames smile )

I'm not into video, so I'm hoping that a traditional still frame DSLR is coming along soon. I'm sure Canon must have to announce something soon, either no more DSLRs (so buy the R5), or a new 5DV (buy a discounted 5Div or wait for the 5Dv). No announcement must be stopping people like me from making a buying decision.

I have an R with an EF adaptor and AF is plenty sappy enough for me, but more importantly accurate, unlike with DSLRs which was very hit and miss. I am talking about f1.4 lenses and faster, the slower lenses are always going to be more forgiving. The R is no sports camera and suspect the R5 will not match a 1DXmkIII, but who knows?

I have a 35mm 1.4 on it now and that is quite a long lens, so with the adaptor makes it longer and front heavy, if you only held the body, but feels very comfortable supporting the lens in the left hand, so not an issue for me. I am thinking of moving over to some of the RF glass, but still keep some EF and also be able to use Nikkor Leica glass, with adaptors on the adaptor.

After years go Canon being criticised for crippling their cameras, cropped sensor video, no IS etc, they have obviously thrown the kitchen sink of features at the R5. 8K is great, if you need it? You can take stills from it, but if you want stills, shoot stills. There is an awful lot of processing going on to be able to shoot 8K Raw internal, so heat is going to be a problem and is being talked about. You can, apparently, shoot for 20mins and then it may stop, then you have to wait 10mins cooling time to be able to shoot another 3 mins, or 20mins cooling time to be able to shoot for 8 mins.

These mirrorless cameras can be capable of amazing things, but have to compromise with their small form factor. If you want to shoot video, buy a video camera… or wait for the next iPhone.

As ever, YMMV...
