Afternoon all. I have tried the search function but I'm not entirely sure it's working. Anyway.

In the market for a bridge camera pissing about with mega-zoom on the odd occasion and I started down the Nikon range.

Starting at the P900 and then, of course, disappearing down a YouTube review hole I threw away my "I can't spend any more than £400" budget advice and found myself looking at the P1000.

From the P900 to this it upgrades itself for *even more* zoom capability, a hot shoe function, and ability to take a decent mic and shoot 4K vids.

P900 bundle on SLR hut is available with all sorts of goodies for under £400 and the P1000 with the big bundle at £733.

The reviews are consistent. It's by no means any replacement for a DSLR and is very much a point and shoot camera and a massive one at that. one thing that is also consistent is that the sensor size is tiny and the only thing separating it from a high-end phone camera is, of course, the optics.

I still have my trusty EOS400D and array of lenses, it does need a service and a jolly good clean and it doesn't have any of the fancy features that of course the new wave of cameras have but the build quality is solid.

I'm just looking for a camera i can keep in the car and grab quickly when I see something without having to decide what lens i need to do what i want to. But then £733 to do this seems expensive.

So, to you PH - casting aside the purist view of DSLR or go home what have you guys done. Of course, the immediate draw of this camera is being able to shoot the moon and show off to my already uninterested family. Given that this use case will get old quickly I'm open to suggestions.

Peace!

From https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikon-coolpix-p10...

'its lens is challenged by a slow maximum aperture (and thus diffraction) and image quality can be compromised by the same thermal and atmospheric issues that are typical of images taken at extreme distances with any super telephoto lens.'

If you want nice photos of the moon how about buying a telescope and putting the DSLR on it?

It's also f8 at the long end, if that's relevant to what you plan.

Yeah, i suppose £700 would buy a decent 'scope. Still find myself with a bit of a gap though for shooting every day stuff but I've got an 18-200mm lens for my DSLR.

Idle hands....

Sony RX10iii - second hand for your budget - razor sharp and f4 at 600mm equiv, can provide sample pics if interested smile

Yes please although I'm never very lucky with pre-owned kit like this. However I've managed to almost double my original budget so what's a few extra hundred!

I'm going to be bankrupt by the time this is all over.

They really are very good - great way to get 600mm at f4... only real downside is the high iso performance is weak (compared to a 'real' camera). They have a '1 inch' sensor which is a lot larger than the P1000 and most other bridge cameras so a good compromise imho smile

Those are great, love the clarity and the composition.

I had a look for some stills taken on the P1000 and if i can achieve anything to what the below looks like i think I'll be doing well. Of course I'm not sure how biased this site is or how much editing or indeed if they ARE actually from the P1000.

Cheers. The images in that look decent right enough - dpreview are very reputable so I'm sure they are legit.

Cool. I'll do a bit more reading then will probably just get it bought. I'm now thinking more about it's heft than anything else.

Hmm. I'm moving away from this now i think on account of its size and general image quality being a bit substandard for something at this price point.

Through my travels i have stopped on Panasonics Z1000 ii. 1" sensor, 2000m (equiv.) zoom and a lot lighter.

Nice camera but it's 400mm equiv isn't it?
