Doing research into the best stuff to buy to help get colour right from shoot through process, monitor and print.

I know I need a monitor calibration tool of some description and I have seen the x-rite passport colour matrix cards to use during shoots - photos for printing are sent to a professional printer rather than doing them ourselves.

So I am hoping the PH camera crew can point me in the right direction for the best tools for the job.

Is there a single brand that provides an integrated process with everything needed “in the box” or would a combination of brands (eg x-rite passport and data spyder monitor calibration) be the right way to go?

I will look over a number of price points so if there is a definite advantage in going for more expensive kit then it will be considered, although obviously the cheaper I can get good kit that works well the better.

Hope you can help with recommendations , cheers, Steve.

Calibrate your monitor (I used Adobe Gamma but that was some time ago), shoot RAW and process correctly. As for getting WB right, if the image didn't have anything white or neutral grey to go from, I did it by eye as it was mostly weddings (ie not studio). If you're in a studio then just have something white in shot you can use as a reference. Can't see you need to spend much money on it, unless the concept of white balance has changed in the last 10 years.
