Hello All,

I've been contemplating taking up photography (loosely) as a wee hobby, I'm in and about some cool engineering sites etc with my work figured why not.

Anyway I used to use my drone quite alot for taking photos but don't bother now.

My pal is fancying getting into drones (I have a P3S) and asked did I want to swap my drone for his gear.

Camera
Case
Memory cards
various lenses
tripod
flash

Everything to get me going, now I didn't plan on doing this but I don't plan on using my drone as it's not moved for a year.

Seem a good deal?

It depends almost entirely on the lenses. They could be worth £100 or a few thousand.

On a camera worth £150 ish, I don’t think shutter count is important, and probably isn’t even known.

Could be completely worthless if it’s too high. Easy to check though

Hi All,

My mistake it's a Eos 60D

Shutter count is 8000 on it, 64gb card, 2 spare batteries and a battery handle, 2 decent lenses, cheaper telephoto lense and loads of other bits.

Drones worth about £200. I never use it.

60D is still a capable body, there's a firmware called magic lantern which adds some of the features of the newer Canon DSLR's https://magiclantern.fm/

That’s still no help. “Decent lenses”... which ones, exactly? A used lens can be worth £30 or £5000, no problem. You’re asking us to value the unknown.

That's why I asked what the drone was worth. Even if they're kit lenses the whole lot would be worth more than £200 so it's a 'go' from me.

Yeah, ok. Drone worth £200 ish, camera gear a minimum of about £250. So for the lack of hassle with advertising etc, go for it. lol

Are you doing this on purpose? smile

Which 50mm, for example?

Tony - Not at all, my knowledge is limited smile

I'm popping out to his house on Monday to pick it up, he has sent me pics of the lense

It says - Canon EF 50MM
Sigma DC 18-200 1:3.5-6.3 hsm

He took photos on his phone and they're not the best.

Where would be a good place I can do some research on takings some nice photos etc.

Youtube is best for seeing what functions do what on the camera and the effect on the photo taken, a video is worth a thousand words.

I applaud anyone wanting to tackle a new hobby from scratch.

However it does seem you are at, shall we say, level 0 at present, and a DSLR kit will take some dedication and learning ability to get to grips with. If you want to learn photography as a subject, then it's perhaps the best route IF you can learn (I don't mean that rudely; I have a friend who still can't understand what 'aperture' is even though I must have explained it 20 times!)

If however you simply want to be able to take decent snaps, and not worry too much about the tech and physics, then an affordable compact might be a better start. You'll be able to get decent results more quickly with less to learn - the downside being that if you really take to the hobby you'll need to upgrade when you 'run off the end' of what the compact will do.

In short, don't get a load of kit you don't understand just because it's there, you might hit the wall and give up.

I understand what lens can do what and so fourth, I've just been typing onto here in between meetings hence not alot of details.

I know a bit about photography etc and going to have alot more time to learn about it as I'm going to be home a hell of alot more.

It's good to learn new things smile

No, I'm entirely confident it's him. Several others have tried too!

Collected all the kit today.

Had a wee play about with it on lunch on the basic modes, it's a nice piece of kit and straight away the photos look cracking on it (bear in mind I'm a point and shoot phone guy)

Came with a fancy tripod, remote, stand for the telephoto lenses, nice rucksack for it.

My books arrived on Saturday so going to start reading up etc.

Just ordered 2 spare batteries for the battery grip also.
