Sigma communication error.

My 18 month old Sigma 18-250 HSM lens has started to give this error on my Canon 550D, I’ve tried it on my Daughters 1000D too and it’s still doing it. Other lenses appear fine.
The error code is Err1 and the Camera locks up and will only restart if it’s turned off and back on.
Checking on line this doesn’t seem a particularly uncommon problem, has anybody on here had it and what was the cure?
I’ve tried cleaning the contacts and also using the smallest aperture for a few shots, still doing it.
It’s out of warranty so I expect it will incur a cost from Sigma if and when I return it.
