Sony upgrade help

A colleague of mine has asked for some help to find an upgrade fo her husband's camera, ready for his birthday
It's a Sony Alpha 100, which Wikipedia tells me is a crop-sensor DSLR with a 10-ish MP sensor
He has a Tamron 28-300 and another much shorter lens (presumably a kit lens from when the camera was purchased)
Budget is £1500 (plus a bit more if required)
Clearly, it would be good to stick to Sony, for familiarity and lens compatibility
Any suggestions?

Just one really, tell them to involve the husband in the purchase, it all sounds romantic buying a surprise but we have no idea what he would want so that would be my suggestion.
