Is this possible? I have a bunch of clips I want to add commentray too....I can do this easily with a live mic import but would rather have a video (which I will then show as a video in video) - but can I live import to the mac off the 80D or do I need to record ontop the 80D SD card then transfer it over????

You'd be best off just recording a video on the 80d's SD card, then putting that card in your computer and transferring it across from there.

Shooting tethered, from camera to laptop, works fine for stills, as its only got to send across 1 photo at a time. But a video file is 25 of those a second, and the USB 2.0 port on a 80d, wouldn't be fast enough to do that, not at full HD anyway.

Some cameras can be used as 'webcams' when plugged in, but the quality won't be great. Id keep it simple, and record on the camera

Only way is to use something like a BlackMagic Mini Recorder to take a HDMI feed from your camera.
