Sony RX100 VII
Discussion
Just picked up a Sony RX100 VI in Oz this week, and now see the Mark 7 released.

Not whinging at all. The specs and performance so far of the Mk6 are quite astounding considering its size. The newer version is even more so.

There's a number of ebay sellers (from Switzerland they say but deliver from a UK warehouse but the company is registered in China)(???) who advertise the VI for just over £700 rather than the £1000 elsewhere.
Can't help but think it's a scam somehow....

£729 for the VI from my preferred 'grey' market shop.
About right now that the VII has arrived.

How do they do the much reduced price.
I assume they avoid duty or something?
Or are they refurbed returned ones?
Do they have the same equipment etc as a UK model?
Called me sceptical, just wary...
Over the years I've bought my Canon 6D, 5DMIV, EOS R, Sony RX100IV, Sony RX100VI, Canon 100-400 L MKII and other stuff from them too. All brand new. All with PayPal protection. I assume they avoid duty or something?

Yes, they try to avoid Duty as far as I am aware. If Customs shows an interest in their shipment, it means your order is delayed. Presumably they take the hit on that Order. If not, they resend. I know this because it has happened to one or two of my Orders in the past.
They provide their own warranty cover as part of the deal, not sure if any good, not needed to invoke it yet. I'm one of those who is happy to take the risk over buying local.

Smuggling, as far as I can tell. They don't pay VAT or duty. Some offer to reimburse any duty if you're charged it - working on the assumption that probably 99% of their sales get through customs without being spotted. They're typically shipped with fraudulent custom docs that mis-state the value and will have some random individual listed as the sender. Mr Pointy said:

Is a Mk 1 in good condition worth £150?
Buying or selling? To buy, yes. To sell, depends on the market. If you buy it, take a photo of a wall (bricks - from about 20 ft). then look at the corners and make sure they are in focus (within reason, they won't be perfect). Some of the Mk 1's were a bit crap in that regard.
You'll know if you have a good one.

I have to say, 6 is astounding quality.
I'm tempted by 5a or 6 at present. The longer zoom of the 6 is appealing but I'm not sure if I'd miss the wider aperture of the short zoom. And the 6 is £300 more at present....Currently have a Lumix LX7 which opens to a max of f1.4
Decisions, decisions.

Does make a cautious person wary.
I paid £830 for my R100VI from Ted's Cameras Brisbane last month. Compared to the UK prices, it was great value, and from a very reputable retailer.
Also bought the Lensmate attachment and Hoya filter pack....verdict is very good and a great add on to get a circular polariser fitted.
And I bought "The Friedman Archives Guide to Sony's RX100VI" in Kindle edition. It's a good read and covers EVERYTHING. One of the most useful bits already is the section summarising all the menu options, and his preferred set up to get started. Now as I'm starting to use the camera I am slightly tweaking those settings to my own personal style. But having his settings to start with, as opposed to the camera default is a good headstart.
Oh, and another charger and 2 spare batteries.
Any other pearls of wisdom / essential accessories you can recommend?
[I know this thread is about the MkVII, but we seem to be talking a lot about the VI]

Yep, but when I read the negatives, they clearly didn't understand the risk of delay was the price for a cheaper product. I've had stuff delayed due to Customs issues with them twice. Worth it for the saving. Their Tracking is made up until a local courier gets it after Customs. 57% positive, 43% negative.

For me, it is relatively risk-free because...PayPal. I've always won with PayPal so if I ever had an issue with Hong Kong shops, I'd recover my money.
Obviously, the other risk factor with grey is warranty. You get International and in eGlobal's case, their own too. Any good? Not found out.
Totally appreciate a lot of folks prefer a physical shop or local website. I do too for my bicycles for example: spent over 13k on 2 bikes this year, from a physical shop. I was happy to pay for expertise , good advice and support.
Electronics? Happy to get them from wherever is cheapest that uses PayPal.
Sorry to hijack this thread on the VII.
I am after a small compact camera to take with me when i don't want to lug the 1DX about!
Off to Canada for a road trip in a couple of weeks and whilst taking the big gear (mountain bike world champs in Quebec at the end of the holiday) it would be nice to have something smaller.
The Sony RX100 series is raved about here but no way do I want to pay for the latest one.
However on MPB they have the mark 3 which is reasonable price and the mark 5 which is £200 more. I could stretch to the 5 but is it worth it?
After a walkabout camera but something that could maybe slip in my bag when i am biking to capture some action shots etc.
Any thoughts?
Cheers
