Transferring VHS to Digital

Hi. I have an old collection of VHS video - family videos etc - which I would like to transfer to digital format both for easier consumption and also future proofing it.

Any tips on best approach to use? I was thinking of hooking up the VCR either via an ADC device, or I also have an old digital tape based camcorder than can convert incoming analogue signal to a digital stream (on to FireWire).

Do you have a favourite software to capture in? I can use a Mac or PC. I previously tried with Adobe Premier though main issue was that the digital stream was perhaps taking up a lot more space that the quality of video warranted.

I would take them to a Snappy Snaps or any other service that does conversions and get them to digitise the tapes. It can be a bit of a faff and better to focus your time on the editing and tweaking for which iMovie on a Mac is perfect.
