Action cameras
Discussion
Hi I've been looking at these for a few days now at the budget end of the market and frankly confused.
So there's the gopro 7white which seems OK. Lower res. Not 4k and built in battery, through to options like the akaso ek7000 up to the elite, camparks, crosstour, apeman and various other Chinese cams.
Now all of these seem to have critical reviews which leave me guessing/wondering what I'll end up with!
So any recommendations for this year's models ie anyone who's bought one fairly recently?
Want to use it for paddle boarding, dash cam use on longer trips and general knocking about. Thanks!

I've had GoPro from the original through to the Hero4 black, which have all been used for the activities you list, plus a fair bit of snorkelling and scuba. Each has been faultless with excellent video quality - although for most shots I would use the 2k resolution at the medium FOV setting as I don't particularly like the fisheye look.
I was looking to upgrade to a newer model this year and, as I've started shooting aerial stuff using DJI drones, I decided to give the new DJI Osmo action a go - primarily as I can set identical colour settings across all cameras. It turned up at the weekend and I did a couple of hours of playing around out on the mountain bikes and was really impressed with the results, it (as you would expect) blows the hero4 away, the colour reproduction seems pretty good and the in built stabilisation is fantastic. Both are the same price although GoPro have £100 off if you recycle an old camera.
Theres some bargains to be had with the older GoPros - CEX tend to have quite a few in stock

On the GoPro Hero 7 Black can these be used as dash cams too?
You can get a suction mount for the car yes, dependent upon the length of journey you may need external power rather than battery and I believe the later GoPro's have built in GPS etc so that telemetry could be overlaid on the footage if required.I haven't used mine for much photos but tested it a couple of times near the beach we were at, they seem decent quality although you do get a bit of the fish eye effect from the type of lens, i'm pretty sure mine has a setting to remove that electronically though.
Some examples from mine, although size reduced due to the size limit on here:

used to be GoPro, had an original hero all the way through to a six. I am now in the DJI universe with a Mavic drone, Osmo action and Osmo pocket. It's great stuff. The Osmo pocket is great out and about and the gimbal is great, super easy to use and very intuitive with the touch screen. The action is much sturdier and beats my old GoPro easily. very stable footage mountain biking etc.
ended up using the trade in offer and ordered the GoPro H7Black yesterday. I won a faulty digital camera on ebay for £1 for the trade in
Its really a £50 trade in as they already have £50 off but the trade in is off rrp....so not such a good looking deal but better than nothing. Now watch them knock £150 off rrp!!!
