Evening all,

I’m a massive Sony pervert these days. Can’t deny it. Got a couple of A7II bodies and several utterly wallet raping prime lenses, but I can’t say enough good things about Sony stuff these days.

I’ve had an RX100 which was a brilliant camera, and now I’ve got the M3 version, which I’ve used extensively over the last few years.

But, something terrible has happened to my M3. It seems to have received a tiny dent in the very front of the metal ring around the lens.

When you press the on button, everything is normal except I noticed the lens cover was only half opening, and had to be gently pushed the rest of the way open using my finger. I then noticed the tiny dent, which given the microscopic tolerances in a camera like this, is clearly fouling the lens cover mechanism.

Motherfker.

For less than £1000, is there anything better than an RX100, before I go out and buy another RX100?

The only rule is that it must be a pocket size similar to the RX100.

I don’t need zoom. I only ever really shoot street scenes, landscape, inside buildings etc. So I would consider fixed focal length.

I was somewhat interested in the new Ricoh GR3, but don’t know how it would stack up against the Sony.

Thank you.

I'd personally get a fuji x100. As another decent point and shoot my wife loved her old canon g12 so perhaps worth looking at the newer version of that. She has an rx100 now and only ever says how much more she preferred her old canon and how it felt more solid and less fragile. She only got rid because she'd had it so long and thought it would be worth getting something with more MP as we like to print our photos.

Someone lent me a Fuji X100 a year or so ago.

I just didn’t get on with it unfortunately.

It is really quite large, and not a pocket camera like the RX100.

I’ve just checked, and the size of the X100 body is actually the same as the size of the body on my A7II, which is full frame.

I also find the ‘retro’ looks a bit cringe, but I don’t buy a camera for its looks, so I can ignore that bit.

Just the size really.

Sony managed to cram a full frame sensor and Zeiss lens into the RX1, and it’s barely any bigger than an RX100.

Shame the RX1 is so expensive.

You are unlikely to find a camera with the same spec as the Sony that's the same size or smaller but that's the main thing I dislike. The diminutive size is what makes it so fragile so for me I'd rather something a bit bigger and more durable. I personally don't take P&S cameras out with me anymore, I'm either travelling so light I'll make so with a phone camera or I'll put the 35mm 2.8 on the A7iii and put it in a jacket pocket or small bag. Might be worth having a look at Olympus options though- I loved all the Oly cameras I had, and miss them even now I've got the sony.

Canons g7x ( mk2 etc) is similar in size and abilities depending on what you do

Ricoh GR 2 or 3.

Fuji x70 (I have this alongside my xt20 and love the x70, mainly use it for random trips and mainly my lads trips where I don't want £2ks worth of camera and lenses kicking about in some random sthole) but if you didn't like the x100 then all the x70 offers is a flip screen I guess.

I'd stick with the Sony thinking about it you like it and you know it so why bother swapping. They are tools after all. I'd only swap my x70 for an updated version of it.

What about an A6***, depending on what primes you have, with the right lens it would be similar in size to an RX1.

ETA - you could actually get an A6000 and a RX100M3 within your budget wink

With the Sony Cashback deal on at the moment you could get an A6300 and RX100M3 for a smidge over your budget smile

Hadn’t even thought about the A6xxx series to be honest.

The only other thing I was looking at was the Ricoh G3.

There’s been some good suggestions in the thread, and I think I just need to watch some review videos and make up my mind!

You could look at a Canon G7x II - I switched from and RX100 because I liked the touchscreen lcd control option and have never yearned for the RX100 since changing and that was some years ago.

This.

I have a peli case full of Fuji for real shooting but the camera which is never more than 100m away from me is the G7X Mk.II. I use it in the lorry, out walking, I've even shot pit lane with it and the customers don't know the difference from the Fuji gear. Its a great little camera at a good price.

I got a RX100m6 although I already have an rx100m3, primarily for the extra reach but I have found the camera has been improved in many ways, focusing is much better, operation quicker, the EVF is better and much easier to use (although I still need little blobs of blu-tack to stop the diopter lever moving). I think there is less noise with the newer sensor too.
It’s a pocket marvel, apart from in really low light it’s hard to justify the weight of carrying my 5Dii.
The extra zoom length is surprisingly useful, but if you really don’t need it then the rx100mva is slightly less money.
I can’t think of anything to match the combination of portability and performance that the rx100 range delivers but I think there’s a new Panasonic LX100 available with a M43 sensor.
But the biggest drawback to the rx100 is that because it’s so small, it’s quite fiddly to uses so not everyone gets on with. You’ve clearly been ok so I think another one is your best option

Have you thought about sending it back to Sony for repair?

Sounds to me like this could potentially be fixed without too much bother

Unless, this is just the perfect excuse for new stuff
