So, I'm a bit of a novice on the photography front, but one thing has been irritating me when taking photos on my iPhone.

I often get a nice image set up with the subject nicely focussed where I want it, but in the corner or some other place of the shot there is a huge amount of over exposure. When I go to focus on that area the overall exposure of the shot comes down to remove it, but then the whole image (including the subject) is too unrealistically dark!

I have HDR setup and that helps for making the sky look better when it gets over exposed, but in other situations it isn't enough.

Am I doing something wrong or is the iPhone just limited in these situations?

cheers

Which model iPhone? There are some significant differences in camera ability across the range.

Have you tried tapping on different parts of the image to adjust the exposure? Often tapping on the dark part of the image will increase exposure, tapping on the brightest will decrease it.

And sliding your finger up/down after tapping also adjusts the brightness.

However, I think the issue is that the OP has run into the limit of the dynamic range - the sensor on any camera can only measure so many steps of brightness, less than the human eye can see.
