Cine Film Conversion
Discussion
Short Q
I have a dvd of some cine films that have been converted, however one film appears to have shrunk whilst stored in the loft. The film is nearly 70 years old.
The guy who converted has advised playing the one film at 2x speed as it then becomes almost watchable. Is there an App that will allow me to convert the DVD file to Avi or similar at 2x speed to allow for uploading to YouTube etc?
Long Q
After my Mum died back in January, we found a box full of cine film in the loft. My wife has taken some of these have been taken to a local firm who has converted a few to DVD. However apparently one film has shrunk while being stored in the loft, and while the conversion has still worked, he has stated it needs playing at 2x speed to make it watchable.
I want to upload these films to YouTube or similar to allow our widespread family to view. The DVD film in question is at this link:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XuWUvP2SjMc&t=...
Now it seems playing it 2x speed on the DVD player on the TV does what the converter guy says, and it is watchable. Playing it at 2x speed on YouTube on the computer or Ipad does not!
The film section in question is of my Mums wedding - so it would be terrific for the family to be able to watch this online. Is there an app where I can convert this dvd file to 2x speed into an Avi/MP4(or another format) etc so that it is watchable online?
For info (and I do appreciate these will not be of interest to others!!) the other parts of the conversion are here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GMCKg_wne8c&t=...

I have also about 2000ft of Pathe home made film which I have been told is far better quality. (The Pathe film, not the actual home made film). we are just waiting for a quote to get that converted!!
Many many thanks
Matt

I've just done this for two decades worth of old family cine films.
I used Handbrake to rip the video files from the DVD, then a video editing package to split into clips (I didn't need to change playback speed, but I assume it could do this as well). I'm on an Apple Mac so used iMovie.
Good luck! There's some great insights into families to be uncovered.

Thanks for the tip. I had to write the Eulogy for Mums funeral - I made it a lot about her life before being a Mum - you can imagine how emotional these are for me and my family!!I used Handbrake to rip the video files from the DVD, then a video editing package to split into clips (I didn't need to change playback speed, but I assume it could do this as well). My PC is a bit crap - but I do have a MacBook Air (well my daughter does) - I might look into using that - will give me some ammo to convince the wife we need an iMac!!

And good on you for writing an eulogy for your mom, I couldn't do it for my dad so anyone who can at those times have my upmost respect.

I think there's an app called iMovie that will allow you to increase the speed of the film. This might be a bit easier to install than Handbrake, but Handbrake personally would be my choice.

Thanks - it was interesting to write - but i could not deliver it - the vicar stepped up brilliantly! And good on you for writing an eulogy for your mom, I couldn't do it for my dad so anyone who can at those times have my upmost respect.

Davinci Resolve will do everything you could reasonably want and more, works on PC and Mac and is free. It's serious professional software and is particularly well know for its colour grading capabilities, something that I am sure would be important in your situation.
Sounds ideal.... will have a gander later! Cheers.Gassing Station | Photography & Video | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
