Hi all,

I enjoy taking photos and recently decided to read up on what makes good photos. I’m really trying to get my head around composition, and what makes a good photo or not.

Armed with my ‘phone I’ve taken some photos to try out the rule of thirds / balancing the photo, but I have no idea whether I’m on the right lines or not. Any pointers on this would be really gratefully appreciated!

My assessment of the composition was trampled over by the spot colour effect! But yes, it looks fine to me.

The third image is ruined by the bin and the red post.
Try to avoid only thinking about the rules of composition. Before you put the camera up at your face, survey the scene and ask yourself: what am I trying to say with this? What attracted me to this? Then, cut out everything else if you can.

OK pretty decent start, I agree with the spot colour comment, it should be used sparingly for impact, though the overall B&W feel with these works.

Overall decent comp, I'd like to have seen daylight/separation between the tram and the bridge all around it, give it more space, having it on the LHS with rails going to the lower right is a classic and works well, love being able to see through the small arch down the path, shame there isnt someone there walking.

This is OK too, , leading lines and decent subject, I feel you could have improved it shooting closer to the ground, they all look taken at head height, try changing this perspective as much as you can

Bin and post as described above. IMO the shot here would have been the tram and the post in isolation making a feature of the 'cars stop' sign

The car is too dominant and there isnt enough separation between that and the tram(s). The whole rhs doesnt do much and the lamppost growing out of the car doesnt work. I think you could have given all those elements more room.
