Not necessarily starting out in photography, but never felt the need to go FF for my personal work - I hire FF 1Ds and 5ds for work shoots (the latter for massively high resolution images) but what the heck....

I took the plunge on a 5d 'Classic' for myself to accompany my rather battered 60d - For £200 whats not to like about the price, I even have an old dinosaur the 10d, so all my old gear batteries etc will work with the 5d.

Tell you what for such and old piece of kit, and a regular user of very modern FF gear, this old 5'er really does hold its own, there is a magic to that sensor...also I really like the slow pace the camera forces you to take, the simplicity of it, yes its not fast and has a really old processor and the rear LCD is shocking (but i turn that off anyway) The rest is marketing imo...lets get back to basics.

Watching them for a while, and I swear prices are creeping up on these old bodies.

My 5d is still my main camera, I've resisted the urge to upgrade so far, but possibly will later this year.

To be honest the image quality is still excellent for amateur use, and the only real need to upgrade is to a body which will retain AF when I combine my 400/f5.6 with a 1.4TC....

its bloody brilliant, coupled with a 40mm prime - love the thing!

Dare I say it I have started keeping my 60d in my bag now, and only use it for low light work - this is the 5d weakness but still not awful.

The colour and feel of the images is like nothing else I've ever shot with. A 5D Classic with a cheap 50mm is still a mighty combo to this day and absurdly cheap for what it is. I essentially treat it as a film camera as the rear LCD is so bad it's unusable (mine is basically green!)

Obviously it falls over in poor light a bit compared to what we're used to now, but on a sunny day there's nothing like it.

Mine doesn't come out to play too often now, but here's a set from a few summers ago...

Great pics mate! yeah I have read a few reviews even in 2018 where many photographers still highly regard the film qualities it has.

Although I upgraded to the Mark 3 a couple of years ago (really for low light performance), the 5D mark 1 still comes out and gets used as a second camera, and in decent light with a quality lens, it still makes really good pictures.

I remember when I first got the 5D - my first full frame digital camera, and was very pleasantly surprised at the time how some of the first pictures I took with it at a cricket dinner with flash looked sort of natural and detailed unlike previous efforts with my 40D:

Also it was pretty good outdoors, and for animals..:

A great camera! I bought mine as a temporary stop gap in 2010 and only traded it in a few months ago, as I wanted to shrink my kit.

If anyone is interested I have just been having a clear out and found the 5D manual etc (still sealed) and a Really Right Stuff L bracket.

One thing I have noticed is the rear LCD screen is utterly useless - I turn this off now and just use the histogram to get the exposure correct - all the images if exposed well are so beautiful its uncanny.
