Need cheap SLR for trip
Discussion
I am going on a trip to Cuba in a few weeks, so wanting to take/buy a cheap/light canon SLR with me, so I dont have to worry...
I am a semi-pro photographer, as my second job and use my main dog a Canon 7D (not exactly the most expensive but still big and attractive, and rather heavy coupled with a nice lens, I mainly shoot studio work now so this stays on its tripod most of the time). So a good walk around SLR would be cool.
I have a golden oldy a Canon 10d, which still works but knowing my luck it will lock up its last shot when in the middle of the trip, and now its rather slow.
So, looking at 450d/500d on the net, god they have gone cheap, i have an arsenal of L lenses, which will fit, some i may leave behind also...
I did have a 350d few years back and it was a joy to walk around with...
so thoughts on the 450/500d guys? <£100 will get you a body

I went to Cuba a few years back with a 60D (plus a 17-85 and 70-200L) and was left alone and never felt unsafe (unlike in Cape Town with same equipment). Having said that, I did have £500 cash stolen from my luggage (no safe, not well hidden) when in a guest house on the second night in Havana so YMMV.
I would take the 7D plus decent lenses but get some specialist insurance (I use E&L lunar cover and cancel on my return). Cuba really is an amazing place to photograph so I say take the best, insure it, and then not worry (beyond usual precautions).

Just got a quick quote on E&L on photographic equipment, £3 for the month!, your right this is a good way to go.DailyHack said:
yeah good point, these do take the lenses I am led to believe.
Not sure any of them do. My OH has had G12 and now G15 - not interchangeable lenses.Maybe try the mirrorless EOS M3/etc. They can use your EF and EF-S lenses (with a cheap adapter), and if you buy the 22mm/f2 pancake lens, it's a VERY compact package.
But I'd +1 the RX100 suggestion. I followed the PH wisdom on this, and got a mkII, and it's a great pocket camera. Very unobtrusive.
(Enjoy Cuba - it's a blast!)

The pic quality will never match SLR but unless you fancy blowing them up to poster size, they are good enough.
My Panasonic has 600+mm lens - not exactly great quality at this range but good enough to capture a record. But lets face it how much would a 600mm SLR lens cost and how big would it be.
It also has nifty features like panorama, vertical and horizontal level indicators in the frame, proper eye piece as well as the screen.
As a holiday device its brilliant certainly more than a snaps camera, and 10x better than your phone, whilst being a fraction of the SLR kit needed to do the same things.

Ideally yeah, I have lots of lenses, which is where the IQ comes from, thats why i was looking at taking a smaller dSLR (weight and convenience) coupled with a lens on the trip, that is why the 550d's 'entry level SLRS' are so great in this respect.I quite often sell alot of my photography, privately and on stock websites so resolution needs to be great, like whats been said above Cuba lends itself well for photography so I want to have the best, but not have one arm bigger than the other when i return
Went to NYC last year for an assignment and the 7D with a good prime was so heavy walking around town with...another lad had a 5DS Full Frame, yes more a studio body - lets just say he slept well most nights

canon 200d, pretty small, very light, great connectivity. Bung a pancake on it.
Yup, I own a Canon pancake prime, this is perfect for travel street stuff. Picked up a 60d (these are still very good bodies, quick enough and good resolution, 18 mil is all anybody needs really), needed back up body anyway to the 7D, so this is my kit (gonna take both bodies), not too heavy once the vertical grip is taken off, and that pancake is like a lens cap also very inconspicuous.
Couldn't go back to a 400/500d ergonomically it just doesn't feel right, very cramped controls.
It reminded me of my 350d days, and why I chose to upgrade.
