So I am looking to just make a few small videos showing things I have done/doing to my cars. I have a gopro for any actual driving footage but figure neither that nor a iphone is great for actual filming of doing things.

Not looking to spend much but would need a tripod type of mount as well to sit it on. Any recommendations for something like this?

The answer is almost any camera. However, have you thought about a camcorder.

I bought a camcorder about over seven years ago. It was cheap, a little over £200 then and nowadays a similar about the same price. Despite having a few dedicated cameras, including a G7 with a couple of lenses, I still used the camcorder.

It's main use was videoing rugby matches. In that seven seasons I've been rained on so many times it all blurs into one not to mention sleet and snow, hit with hailstones, my breath froze on the zoom button twice (I didn't figure out the cause the first time), it's been hit twice by players, and almost hit by the ball a few times. I dropped it twice onto hard ground. The second incident required superglue to the casing. Despite all that, it chuntered along with few problems. The zoom was 42x and the stills were around 10mp. The stills weren't great, but they'd be ok for YT.

It is still being used today at the club, but I doubt for much longer. It's taken another knock. I used to put the camera into rice when it got soaked but no one has personal ownership of it now, so it is not looked after.

Budget for some batteries. Don't believe the hype about how long they will last, but don't go for the cheapo ones.

A tripod can be bought for a few quid online or you can go to a camera shop and get exactly what you want, and have somewhere to go if things break. I bought an end-of-line one (it's replacement had just been replaced) and I got a bargain. That was over a dozen years ago and I've still got it. One leg got a little bent during one of the collisions.

Also, buy an umbrella and stick in down the front of your jacket when filming. With a video it's held in position for some time, and it needs protecting from rain, sleet, hailstones and snow.
