New user to FCPX here:

Just getting the hang of media storage - if I choose to have my media remain outside the FCP library (which makes it far easier for me to find bits of that media in the future - without having to dive into a library to get at it) does it make it really complicated to then move that media somewhere else?

The reason I ask is that I tend to work with my media on the SSD hard drive on my iMac - so the FCP library points to it there - but when I am done with that project I want to put my media onto an external hard drive for long-term storage. As such, the library will lose all of its links won't it?

This is something I wanted to do myself and it can be done as you said.

From memory, as I don't have the time to use FCP regularly, you have to make sure footage/clips is found via linking it manually from external hard drive.
One other thing I did find was that the memory was still full of the clips of projects/events, even if I linked them from external hard drive only.

I'm probably doing something wrong, but I think the clips/footage is duplicated when imported even if located in external hard drive, and then stored by default in FCP (and using up memory) in your machine.

I'd suggest duplicating an event/project (call it a test) and having one version only working via external hard drive, and see what happens until you are satisfied it can be done easily.

I'd try and keep your media in the FCP project, saves the faff. When you import footage, tick the box which says copy to library instead of leave files in place.

If you have any projects which you haven't done this, choose the 'Consolidate Media' option from the menu.

I'll add, that if its just 1080p footage that you are editing, then I'd work straight off your external hard drive.

Have a google for FCP X Archiving as it's a complex topic. Here are a couple of hits to start with but there must be more recent ones out there:

You could ask on the user groups as well:
