Transferring film to digital media
Discussion
Search "16mm film to digital conversion" online & send them away to be done, but it's not cheap. Here's one place for example:
https://www.alivestudios.co.uk/cine-film-transfer
Think about getting dust & scratch removal done if it's an option.

Brilliant, thank you, I shall show him that link tonight
There are loads more but condider how you want the output (DVD or files?) & the resolution & file type. That link describes why they don't do DVDs any more but not everyone needs a 4K Prores file. This is the search link I used:https://duckduckgo.com/?q=16mm+film+conversion&...
Think about triaging the reels - are they all really worth converting? When you have selected a potential company send them a sample reel to see what the service is really like.

I’ll have a check with him tonight. The are boxes and boxes of film to go through, I’m not even sure how some of it has held up in storage either.
I think it would be to Memory stick that he would be looking to get it transferred to, not sure if he would be able to play 4K on his computer though.
