I bought myself a Go Pro Hero 6 earlier in the year.

And have been very impressed with it's abilities and video quality. The 4K footage does eat up storage space, so you need to take this into consideration but it's probably worth it.

Still images are a bit "meh" as the shutter release seems slow, i.e. you push the button, hear a click and move the camera and find you have a lovely distorted pictured. Sometimes it looks like a pretty cool effect, but is annoying. However I never bought it to take still images. Take your time in good light and the stills are perfectly acceptable, although the wide angle lens often makes things look odd as a still image.

It's the video where it counts and I have 3 things I love about the Hero 6:

-The stabilisation. I was all set to get a gimbal, but the stabilisation, even at 4k is simply fantastic!

-The colours and saturation. This may divide opinion, but I love how the colours are bright, vibrant and really make the footage "pop". The best thing here is, no real need to do post editing apart from trimming.

-The overall video quality. I have no complaints with it.

Example of the stabilisation. This was using the stock mount included in the kit with the camera, simply stuck to the top of the dash. Note how much the bonnet moves up and down, yet how smooth the video image is.

Here is an example of the lovely colours, note the detail of the grass. This is straight off the camera, no tweaking at all.

  • NOTE - you need to click the cog icon in YouTube to select 4k playback. Also note, the 4k on YouTube is slightly compressed vs what you get off the camera.
