Recommend me the best compact...
Discussion
While waiting for Canon's new mirrorless EOS to be released, I want to update my compact.
Currently looking at the Canon Powershot G cameras...
G3, G5, G7 Mk 2....the new G1 X Mk3 reviews highlight a number of shortcomings despite the quality, such as battery life and price.
Anyone have the G series cameras, or recommend other high end compacts of other brands....I’m not brand loyal for compacts.
Compactness and portability are as important as picture quality, creativity and connectivity.
Cheers :-)

I might as well say it before anyone else does....
Sony RX100 compact camera, comes in various incarnations, from the relatively inexpensive MK1 to the mind bogglingly expensive MK5 (or is it MK6), which each variant being slightly faster and better than the previous one.
I currently have the RX100 MK3 and am thoroughly pleased with it, comes with a 1" sensor, fast 24mm-70mm Zeiss zoom lens, EVF, adjustable rear LCD screen for those low or high shots or the dreaded selfie.
The battery life is pretty good but I would highly recommend you buy an external charger + twin battery kit from Amazon.
The menu system is a bit quirky if you are used to Canon but you do get used to it.
There are smaller cameras and there are better cameras, but the RX100 is a damn good compromise between size and performance, though the latest models are a bit pricey, some might say over-priced, in which case Canon and Panasonic Lumix models are also excellent competitors so well worth a look over in your local camera shop or John Lewis.

Panasonic should be announcing the LX100 II in a few days. Could be worth a look. First iteration still has excellent reviews now and it was released in 2014.

Received wisdom... still Sony RX100 (though the price gets even more silly).
I have two (one in the pocket, one in the car). Served me well over many years.

I've used a number of bridge/compacts. Nikon and Panasonic in the main. I currently own a TX25 (or so) and find it excellent for keeping with me, holidays and times when lugging my (really excellent) G5 about.
I've recently tried a TX80. I was impressed. Decent zoom, 4K, and nicely built.I'm told the TK100 does everything the TX80 does and more. A friend has a Nikon bridge with 900mm lens. The only downside is that there are only so many pictures of the Moon you can take.
I am a fan of Panasonic but wouldn't dream of advising you to go for any particular camera. However, I would suggest that you go to a decent camera shop and handle the various models you are thinking of. Talk to the sales staff - I'm lucky as I live in walking distance of Park Cameras - and listen to what they say. But it must feel good in your hands. You'll be handling it and sometimes cameras don't quite 'fit'.
I've bought my last two cameras from Park and both times I went against the '10 best cameras of 2018' type recommendations.
