I currently use a Tamron 90mm which is ok, but I want to get a "better" lens to replace this one.

Ideallly, better quality overall, VR or simialr and nicer to actually hold....

Looking around, its the Sig 105, the Nikkor 105 as main protagonists....

Thoughts chaps ?

Whats your budget?

Nikon's 105mm FX Macro lens is great, but on a DX camera it works out as a 157.2mm (due to the crop factor), its also not cheap at £850 (on offer with an 70 quid discount from Nikon so comes in at £780).

Sigma also do a 105mm with OS (optical stabilisation), it gets good reviews and its half the price (good to look up comparisons) at £360.

I have this as my main lens on my D7100, its a really nice macro that is a good all rounder, recommended to my by my pro photographer cousin smile (its also a DX and not an FX lens).

What is really good is that you could actually buy both sigma lenses for less than the price of the Nikon one smile

I have the older Nikon 105mm Micro (AF-D, no VR) and it suits me OK. Relatively cheap.

Never tried the Tamron but I have the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 Macro with OS and I love it. I don't tend to shoot much macro with it, use it as a medium-long prime mostly but having AF and OS makes it handily multi-purpose like that. It's capable of some very, very sharp images.

as TonyB says, whats your budget?

Best, is Nikon 200 f4 Micro, which although being a VERY old lens, still leaves most lenses in its wake.

105 VR is a great lens, along with lenses from 3rd party manufacturers as mentioned above.

It's worth adding something like a Raynox DCR150/250 to your current lenses if you have not tried that already.

Budget is fairly free, but Id be looking at a late used Nikkor if I to got that route.

Have Raynox, and tubes, but enjoy the lens for more than macro, but do want it to be better than the Tamron.

Just looking around tonight, it appears my current Tamron is the 272E and the later, better version F017...

Anyone experienced either care to comment ?

My other half uses a Sigma 50mm macro on her Nikon - her photos are pin sharp. Hard to fault the lens really...

Pretty much all macro lenses are going to be sharp, whatever that means in the day of digital processing. The more important differences IMHO are working distance (50mm doesn't let you get much lighting to bear on the subject if it's needed), and arguably VR if you're not using a tripod.

Read this review: https://kenrockwell.com/nikon/200mm-micro.htm

It's going to hurt the bank balance, but if you want the best!
